Earth Day was briefly discussed in the forums recently and we were thinking it would be great to have an official Nerdfighter Project! I suggested that we have a goal...I'm thinking 1000lbs of debris but am totally open to suggestions.... and then on April 22nd we all head out into our very own communities and do some clean up.....garbage on the side of the road.....clean up a local spring/pond/lake/river/beach/etc......pick up trash in a park....or a nature trail.....whatever! Then weigh the collected debris and report back to me and I can tally all the waste collected. It would be great if you could also recycle any recyclable material too. But I know not every area has that capability. There wouldn't be any prizes or anything....but I would come up with a little something to send to all participants that would sort of memorialize the occasion!!! So, is anyone interested? Please pass this along or post a link on your blog so that we can get this idea out to as many Nerdfighters as we can! I will also copy this to a forum post....and I believe that the original forum poster, Bella, is contacting Hank about possibly saying something about it as well..... So, just to sort of sum the plans up better....because I know I can tend to be vague at times....and that that can be quite annoying....here it is plain and simple...the plan!
1. Contact me at NFEarthDay08@gmail.com and let me know that you will be participating. Also, if you wish to have me send you a little something to memorialize the day (at the moment I am thinking I will have stickers made up....but nothing is written in stone at the moment) then also leave your mailing address....this is NOT, I repeat NOT a prerequisite to join in....this is only for those that WANT to do so...you can totally participate without giving me any personal info of any kind! And, as a Mother, I would also like to ask that if you are under 18 that you PLEASE get parental consent before you send me your address....
2. On April 22nd celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up some garbage from wherever you can.....recycling as much of what you can as you can....but before you throw it away or recycle it....weigh it! If you don't have access to a scale....make an estimation....as a sort of gauge....a gallon of water weighs approx. 8 lbs. Then email me once more with the weight.
3. I will add it all up and post a blog as well as a Forum post with the results!
That's all there is to it! Some other suggestions on the original thread were that you make a party out of it locally as well....get a group of friends together and pack a picnic or whatever....or a little potluck....either before or after the cleaning up! Again, the Mother in me speaking here.....if you have your picnic AFTER cleaning up....be sure to bring anti-bacterial cleaner with you...in fact, that is just a good idea regardless. Also, if at all possible....wear good leather gloves to prevent injury from glass or other sharp objects. And be very careful if you are cleaning up near roads....BRIGHT colors and stay alert!....And don't try to get garbage from precarious places...we don't want anyone getting injured! BE SAFE! Remember, we are trying to DECREASE WORLD SUCK.....not add to it! :)
DFTBA,
Cat
