I really wanted to do it November '08, but we had tonnes of mock exams, and I was ill. Me and a couple of friends are giving it a go over summer, and I'm really looking forward to it, but I can't think of a plot! And I think we're starting it July 1st! Tips would be welcome, too.

The best advice I can give is don't be afraid to suck. Your writing isn't going to be spectacular the first time if you are writing 50,000 words in a month. That is what editing is for. Find a concept to write about and power on through it. You can fix plot holes or shifting character names later. Just set aside maybe an hour or three a day and write. It might be helpful to do some thinking before hand and have some basic notes about your novel so you don't have to start with nothing. Then again, you don't have to. I signed up literally the day or so before it was to begin and only had a vague idea when I starting writing in November. It is entirely possible to "discover" your novel as you write (just makes editing more involved later.)

I have a few blog posts from last year's event. Somewhat written at the time, hehe. Good luck!

I'm going to try and do it this year, wholeheartedly. It should be fun! (Famous last words....?)

I'm starting it this year, at the moment I think it'll be a bit of fun but I expect the terror to set in any second now.

I'm already planning on doing this November '09. It's probably the busiest month of my school year, but I'm game.

Download a NaNoWriMo calendar, with the goal wordcount for each day.
LOVE YOUR GRAPH. Update it often.
Join the forums. There are AWESOME people on them, including people who will research stuff for you. And help you with plot points. And help with pretty much anything if you start a thread on it.
Don't worry about editing. Don't worry about making the plot likable and your characters fleshed out and real. Just WRITE. You can work on characterization and plot later.
