However, if we use (always somewhat biased) literary criteria, I think many people will find that it is not one the greatest literary achievement.; ▶ Reply to This

It's brought people together in a way LOTR, Dark Tower, etc had begun to do before it, but it's obviously gone one step further (maybe because the generation that grew with it, also grew with the worldwide web which helps such a community communicate and expand). Its fanbase is very dedicated, and the series itself has made reading acceptable again. Maybe acceptable isn't the right word, but it's made it fun and something to share.

But, for all those great things I cannot consider it the best book, or even series in the world. Style and story wise, it has been surpassed many times. In the sense of community and bringing people together it is a great book, but literature wise it is, undoubtedly, not the best.; ▶ Reply to This

Since there are novels out there that manage to create both a fascinating world and are well-written, HP doesn't really stand a chance. Don't get me wrong, I love HP, just saying that it's not a great literary achievement.; ▶ Reply to This
