Okay, so there have been threads about naming cacti and teddy bears. What other things have you named? What's your computer named? (I know I'm not the only one who does this.) If you had (of have!) kids, what would you name them?

Crap! I forgot to add mine.
My laptop's name is Lilli.
I have named plants, my african violet was Iolanthe (greek for violet), and I just bought an ivy looking thing that I haven't named yet, but we'll find one.
Aside from that I don't name many things, aside from characters in stories. Having too many named things in the house would become like having too many children, I'd start calling things by the wrong names. But I do have an obsession with names. I'm the only person I know who reads baby name books for fun.

Omg, you do that too? When I was about 8 I had a collection of baby-name books and my friends would come over and would be like "Um... what the hell?" I have to know what every ones names mean, it's outrageous.

You're not alone. :-) I've sat and read baby name books just out of interest.

Etymology in general is something that fascinates me, which I guess is yet another reason I'm a nerd.

you're not alone on the baby name books. ;) i do that as well. it's so interesting to find out what people's names mean. :D

baby names are fascinating. What they mean, how they're picked... Names in general are so commonly overlooked, but can be so important and interesting. Which is why I like HP so much, all the names have the attention paid to them that they deserve.

Lol, naming an African Violet is 100% not-weird to me. It basically is a child.

yeah my mom is a writer and she has this one book with the names listed by ethnic group and gives the origin. im constanly picking it up and finding cool "Arthurian-legend names" and whatnot.
its not a baby naming book, it's a character naming book, but still AWESOME

:P

Ooh, that sounds useful!

www.behindthename.com it awesome for etymology. You can look look up by so many things, even search for names based on their meaning. I mean, I like J.L Rowling, don't get me wrong, but were we SUPPOSED to be surprised that REMUS LUPIN was a WEREWOLF?! Kind of obvious.

Hm. Two (etymological) Johns in one family.
Oops.

lol. "Hankin" sounds like a progressive verb.
