I always dog-ear my books. Some say this is abuse. I say it's a display of my affection. Do you dog-ear your books or use a bookmark? Do you have any special bookmarks?

Bookmark. :) I used to be able to remember the page numbers but I gave up.

Besides, bookmarks are PRETTY!

Bookmarks, all the time. I hate to sound like an evil, terribly stereotypical librarian, but I really do feel like some sort of demon when I dog-ear a book.

As a result, LOTS of people give me cool bookmarks, from all over. I have one like a Chinese opera mask (from China), one in the shape of a traditional Malay clothing item (from Malaysia), one from my local bookstore that I am particularly fond of for some reason... Etc.

I personally hate dog-earing book page, but I don't mind writing in them with pencil or highlighting in them.

I really like bookmarks, and since I tend to loose them I jut fold pieces of paper and make my own (:

I've never done either. Before I close a book I glance at the page number for a couple seconds, and the next time I pick it up I go straight to that page and continue reading. Though if i haven't read the book for a while, I'll read a page or two before where i left off to spark my memory.

I never use dog-ears or put a book open and text down (there might be a word for this, but I just don't know it). But despite the fact that I have dozens of bookmarks, I usually use paper strips from envelopes, newspapers or anythig I can rip them from.

My girlfriend dog-ears. She's not allowed to borrow my books. :P

heh...sure you can't just trust her to break the habit with your books?

My comment was rather tongue-in-cheek; she borrows my books all the time, though I will playfully scold her for dog-earring.

blasted textual communication...and lack of familiarity interfering with our attempts to be ironic.

Definitely a bookmark.  I dislike it when people dog-ear books, especially library or borrowed books.  I try to keep my books in as best a condition as I can, and it hurts me when I see other people folding their page corners.  And more often than not, I don't use either, I just remember the page number or the general area I was at in the book.  It's not that hard, and it's much easier than dog-earing or bookmarking.

Neither one, usually. I just look at the page number and remember what it is. (Or, rather I try to remember- usually I just get the general area and I have to go hunting for the page.) I do occasionally use bookmarks for especially long books, but the "bookmarks" usually end up being random pieces of paper or other flattish objects like socks.

I write the page number in pencil on one of the title pages or one of the other blank pages at the beggining
