Obviously, I hate Twilight. Everyone seems to love it so much, and I don't understand! Am I the only one?

EDIT- I didn't check this thread for a few days and it exploded. If any Twilight lovers are here just to flame us, please go away. Everyone of course is entitled to their own opinion, and if you want to agree or disagree respectfully, welcome.

*virtual secret twilight hater handshake*

seriously though, the "you've never written a book" argument could work the other way. If writing a book is the criteria to have literary opinions, then Twilighters obviously aren't qualified to like it.

i've read all four and i read the first one three times because i was trying to figure out why people were so obsessed with it. and i'm not going to repost all of the reasons i hate it, they're listed in the above discussions, please read them all before you reply to this.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that, since most people who have posted are capable of carrying on an intelligent discussion about specific reasons the books are awful, they have read them. Perhaps you should try to actually READ something that's not marketed towards horny middle school girls who wouldn't know literature if it punched them in the ovaries before accusing us of hating before reading.

I hated the books, too...I'm not really into the whole vampire-in-love-with-a-human...thing, anyway--I didn't like it on Buffy, either--but I, like everyone else, thought 'oh, everyone likes this so there has to be something to it, right?' And, as I work with quite a few high school girls on a regular basis, had been hearing quite a lot about it.

So, I borrowed the four books and read up until the middle of the fourth one when it got so rediculous I couldn't stand it anymore. I kept thinking 'it has to get better, it has to get better...' but it didn't. it got much, much worse.

I have so many issues with these books that I can't even get into them all or we'll all be here for a long, long time and I have exams to study for, so I'll just glaze over some of them briefly. :D

Basically, I feel that the characterization is terrible--Edward is too perfect/creepy, Bella is just a Mary Sue/extremely annoying/waay too weak to appeal to me as a main character. Also, I really liked Jacob...until he decided to be in love with Bella for God knows what reason. I thought the plot was incredibly weak. Most romance stories--good ones, anyway--have some amount of action to balance out the romance. But not Twilight. The book reads like a jr. high school girl's journal. "Edward wasn't at school today. I think it's because of me. Edward is so beautiful. Edward is so perfect. Edward kissed me tonight..." BORING! Another thing I have a problem with is the vampire lore. Now, I'm all for reinventing and modernizing vampires. However, they should still be a) cool and b) able to be killed. Sparkly vampires are not cool. Vampires that can only be killed by being chopped up into tiny pieces and then burnt do NOT have a weakness. If Edward doesn't even get a scratch on him by getting hit with a freakin' SUV or van or whatever, how is anyone, aside from another superhuman being, going to be able to kill him? They're not. He's too perfect. He's like the undead Superman. And I am not the biggest fan of Superman, either.

What makes me sick is that every time I complain about this book to someone who's not a high school-aged girl, the response I get is "Remember, it's aimed for pre-teen and teenage girls."

I'm 19 and female. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that makes me a teenage girl. Just because a book is YA or written for younger girls, does NOT mean it has to be dumbed down or narrowly focused. There is so much well-written, exciting young adult literature out there, that it's a shame to me that these books are STILL on the best-selling lists.

I'm currently reading The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova; I'm about halfway through. It's another YA vampire novel, but it is SO MUCH BETTER! Likeable, flawed characters (I especially like Helen, Barley, and the as-yet-unnamed narrator), completely engaging storyline and good classic Dracula lore. Not to mention, it's got some pretty amazing descriptions of the places the characters go (Romania, Istanbul, France). It's been taking me a while to get through, but the story is so engaging and multi-layered, I really don't mind.

Yea I hate when people defend the book by saying that it's aimed at teens. Teens ARE capable of reading great, well - thought out literature, not just some author's wet dream. It's really an insult to teenagers in general. Twilight sends bad messages and is horribly written. Saying it's aimed at teens as a defense of the book is utterly narrow minded and weak.

Still, I can sympathize with the desperate Twilight-lover "How could you NOT love this book!?" mentality. I feel the same hopelessness when I ask why really clever and deserving tv shows (in my opinion) are culled because they don't have enough viewers "how could you not love this tv show?". sigh.

I'm certainly not a fan of Twilight. Unfortunately, I don't have a time machine so I can go back and undo reading the book series. Twilight honestly could have been a better series if the author had taken more time to develop the characters, plot, and her writing style. I have to admit the amount of times that Edward is mentioned as beautiful is rather annoying >_> Along with countless other incidents.

I hate Twilight. Plain and simple. Twilight was the biggest waste of time I've ever spent on reading a book. Clearly, there was no real point to the book and the author should consider doing something other then writing such as i don't know, maybe sucking on a pillow case as a profession (don't ask me where that came from)... and I agree 100% about her not spending time on developing the characters. I'm still trying to figure out what most of the fans of Twilight are so excited about.

Note: I've read all the books. Multiple times.

I hate them. They're shallow and contain little to no plot development. I did enjoy them the first time i read them...but once I reread them and actually USED MY BRAIN while reading, I began to hate them. I do, however, know why people like them:
Bella is plain and personality-less enough to allow any reader to assume herself in Bella's position. That means they get the perfect live: A super hot, perfect in every way boyfriend, virtually no homework (uhm, hello, all Bella does is play with Edward...seriously, has she ever written an essay??), and a parental unit who doesn't hover. Who wouldn't want to allow themselves to take on that personality? Well, I'll tell you who. People that actually have strong personalities themselves. People with strong personalities won't put themselves in Bella's position - It's too difficult to do that when all you're thinking the whole time is "I would never do that in that situation. Wow, she's stupid"

Then, because you aren't becoming Bella, you discover how boring and stupid she is. And it just isn't possible to love a book when you hate the main character...especially the one whose point of view it's from.

Also, Stephanie Meyer tends to waaaaaaaay overexplain things. The perfect example: 4th book, during Bella's change.

I have more proof about my becoming-Bella vs. Not-becomng-Bella theory...The part of the 4th book that's from Jacob's POV I actually enjoyed a little bit. Didn't like the writing style, or Jacob's Bella obsession, but I liked him, and his thoughts, which made the lart soooo much more readable

Oh. I should add: The only thing I hate more than Twilight is people who compare Twilight to Harry Potter. DONT DO IT. EVER. GAH.
