Coldplay

I recently bought Coldplay's new cd "Viva La Vida" and I think it is absolutly AMAZING! Fellow nerdfighters, what do you think of their music?

Honestly? Coldplay is the single most overrated band of the last ten years.

Oooh. Harsh. (An opinion is an opinion though).

Coldplay, to me, is like U2. I don't like U2, but their songs get stuck in my head and start to grow on me.

I do like Coldplay's song Viva la Vida, The Scientists, and Yellow.

However, don't let negative comments hinder or anger you. I hate country and hip hop, but that doesn't prevent millions of others from listening to that type of "music."

The difference between U2 and Coldplay to me is that, while I listen to neither, U2 from time to time comes up with songs that you cannot deny are good from a objective point, while Coldplay has been insanely successful with a row of musically very simple songs that all sound exactly the same. Imho there's no musical accomplishment to speak of, there's nothing new, nothing that really sets them apart from other bands. It's just catchy and their singer is somewhat pretty.

The difference between coldplay and U2 is that Bono is God. (I joke).

I've never really heard another band like Coldplay. exampli gratia?

I could actually say that about Rammstein (who my sister and my close friend love). However, Rammstein does have songs that I enjoy, despite my inability to hear the variations from song to song.

Again it's all opinion. But in the end: Yay for music!

Bands that sound like Coldplay, as in names? 'Cause I honestly don't remember (I'm bad with names in the first place, and even worse when it comes to names of bands I don't give a hoot about). All I know is that even before Coldplay there were quite a few bands that sounded quite similar.

I'm not saying that simple music is necessarily bad, or people shouldn't listen to it (heck, I own two Kaiser Chiefs CDs). What bugs me is that by many Coldplay seems to be seen as this incredible, talented, inventive band, and I just fail to see that. I'm not saying they don't deserve to be listened to, I'm just saying they don't deserve the status media has elevated them to.

I think it was more the context they came into. There were bands that sounded vaguely like them, but the bands at the time were not nearly as introspective and reflective as "Parachutes" was. It was like everyone else was dipping their toes into the pool and Coldplay jumped in. At least, thats how I see it.
