OK, we have a Gay Rights thread happening - how about Trans Rights?

Are you comfortable with trans people? Would you be OK sharing a locker room with a trans person who was born the "opposite" gender from you? Do you think that people should be be protected based on their gender identity as well as their sexual orientation?

Check out NCTE (national center for transgender equality)

IT'S NOT EQUALITY WITHOUT THE T.

Of course not! Everyone who's the least bit different from the majority deserves to die! We can't let pepole think they're special or something...

A locker with a trans gender person?
I've never met someone still in high school or younger who changed sexes.
And my school doesn't have lockers(completely irrelevant).

There are a lot of high school students, and some middle school students, who are trans. I work with these students. Four years ago I WAS one of these students.

And it sucks.

I just think it's interesting how people say that they're totally fine with trans people, but then when asked if they'd be willing to share a locker room or whatnot they get all quiet or weirded out.

Yes, of course. Like I said on the gay rights thread, if you are prejudices against transgenders, you are no worse than a racist or a sexist.

Well stated, Katie. The only arguments that people have against it are that they think it's "weird", "gross", or perhaps "against God." These are just prejudices, and have no grounding in reality.

I've never been uncomfortable around transgendered people.

I follow 5awesometrannys on youtube and have a crush on Wednesday. I've known people who believe they were born the wrong gender, and even know a girl who went the whole nine yards and had the surgery. It's bothered me about as much as homosexuality--that is to say, not at all.

I'd be fine with sharing a locker room with a transgendered person, as long as they actually were a transgendered person and not a pervy faker. You never know in highschools these days. :P

So...yeah. They deserve all the rights everyone else has.

I don't have a problem with them at all. I have a cousin who is FTM and one of my favorite people ever is FTM.

I'd love to recommend the book Transparent by Cris Beam.

I'm totally comfortable with trans people. And I would be totally comfortable in that situation. I went to a camp for queer teens this summer and we had gender neutral washrooms. It was the most comfortable I've ever felt. Also, I fully admit that sometimes I don't feel comfortable calling myself a girl. And some days I just want to strap down my boobs and put my hair up in a hat, but it's hard, being in high school. I guess I don't like being tied down to one gender.
The important thing to do is seperate "gender" from "sex"
I think of it this way; when I say sex, I mean junk, what you've got downstairs. And when I say gender, I mean however you identify at that moment in time. Whether it be him, her, or hir.

This is a non-issue to me. People are people, whether straight or LGBTQ.
I think if a person considered themselves my gender, even if they were born the opposite one, they ought to be treated as such. Protection should certainly be extended to encompass gender identity along with orientation; there's no reason not to.

I'm totally chill with whatever.
Oh hey Suzie. What? You were born a man? That's cool.
They should not be treated any differently.

Comfortable? Well that's a stretch, since I'm just a little on the agoraphobic side...especially when it comes to especially uncomfortable environments like locker rooms.

I'm no more or less comfortable sharing a locker room with a transgendered person than I am with any stranger (or person I know that I do not have any desire to have sex with, for that matter). In my opinion, if you identify as a woman, then you should be treated as a woman just--you know--be a little more cautious when it comes to walking around naked.
