Book Recommendations for a Guy?

One of my best friends, who turned 18 recently, discovered that he has cancer and is going to have to stay at home for the summer. He asked me to give him a book list. He doesn't usually read much, I'd even say that he despises books, so I didn't know which books would interest him. I didn't want to tell him that I don't know what he would like because he said that he only asked me since he knows I read a lot. I also wasn't sure about recommending The Fault in Our Stars (the only John Green book available here. I had to buy the others online) since it's about cancer.

What do you think?

I think the obvious suggestions of Harry Potter or the Hunger Games should still apply! I also loved the Percy Jackson series, it's a little "young" young adult, but I'm also an 18 year old male I thought it was a fun read. Slightly more mature would be the Inheritence series by Christopher Paolini or the Spartan Warrior series by Michael Ford or even The Chronicles of Narnia or Lord of the Rings of course. Most of these are pretty well know series, but theres a reason they're so popular. I also find it's the fantasy series that pull me in the most and make me want to just read all day. I hope it helps! I did in fact suggest The Hunger Games but he says he will stick to the film adaptations. I'll suggest the Percy Jackson series, The Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings (since the Hobbit comes out soon) and I'll check out the others.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner was a pretty good book, and i think sufficiently boyish.

Yeah, I'm normally into more boyish books (can't handle too much of that romance stuff) and I enjoyed it and know a lot of my friends (guys) thought it was good. :)

Uh, other than that Harry Potter, clearly, but anything by Tolkien, Narnia (FOR NARNIA!), The Kite Runner and yeah, sorry I couldn't think of any more.

My brother said that he hated reading through high school but was turned on by one author in his youth: Nick Hornby. Haven't met many guys who didn't love him.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. Hilarious, witty, and engaging. Includes drawings that are also hilarious. It's from the point of view of a boy....I loved it!

You might want to recommend the Chaos Walking trilogy. They are some of my favorites, I read all three of them one after another over the course of a day and a half. It would have been less, but I had to sleep in between.
