I used to live on an island in the middle of the North Sea where the best stocked library was a van. No, I am not kidding. A van. There were stationary libraries at schools that were barely okay, but even they were over two hours of travelling from my house. Not so fun or practical. Now I live in a city on the opposite side of the world and there are libraries everywhere.
That didn't stop me buying eight books today...
I believe you on the van thing. It's somewhat common in small towns here in Alberta, Canada; or it's not unheard of, at least.
In my town (of about 10,000... pretty small) the kids never used to go to the library. I remember when I was the only one in the YA department who came regularly. Then the librarian (who's also a Nerdfighter) started making theme days at our library. Monday is movie night, tuesday is crafts, ect. Now kids can't wait to go to the library after school!
Well our library's alright. The teen section is rather small- I'm 13 and have got bored of the children's section- I think I've read all the books there that aren't about loveydovey high school romance/beastquest/likklekiddiespicturebooks anyway! But the teen section is mostly Twilight style stuff, which again I'm not really into. The school library has some slightly better books, but you can't get them out over the holidays, which annoys me greatly! I now prefer to buy books because you can get much more interesting books if you look round WHsmiths or that odd little bookshop we found in Liverpool!
Well, the city library has sometimes really good books in the English section, but usually it's only the stuff that is already some bestseller in Germany. I am also a member of two university libraries, both of which have a good collection of all kinds of books in English. Sadly, still not enough Alan Bennett and comics, although my old university has at least some of the classics, like Watchmen.
The libary-system in my country is amazing. You can just say 'i need that and that book' and they will let it come from whatever city it is in! Though the librarians mostly aren't that nice.
where I live libraries are HUGE! I have three within 10 minutes (by car) of my house, and they always seem to have just the books I want! All the libraries by me are all connected too just like BSmith said, so maybe do some investigating to see if they can order you books and you can pick them up at your library.
