Up until now, we have had a Catholic/ Christian president. How would you feel if we had a mormon(sp?) president?? Just wondering what you would think about that.

Permalink Reply by Julia Chapman on February 24, 2012 at 9:34am I apologize to Wayne if I offended him. I also apologize if some of my research is incorrect (because I am not entirely sure of the facts). Why should I apologize to you?
Permalink Reply by Vertigo_One [Ops Mod] on February 24, 2012 at 10:05am I don't recall asking you to apologise to me.
Permalink Reply by Julia Chapman on February 24, 2012 at 10:07am Alright. I thought you were implying that I should apologize to you.
Permalink Reply by Sheena St.James on March 23, 2012 at 8:56pm The religion of a member of the government should be completely irrelevant. And, if the president in question acts professionally, then it shouldn't matter at all.
Permalink Reply by Abreo on March 23, 2012 at 9:38pm So if they act unprofessionally their beliefs do matter but what they believe doesn't matter if they act professionally?
Permalink Reply by Sheena St.James on March 23, 2012 at 9:42pm The United States government is a secular institution and should be treated as such. In a perfect world, it would never matter at all. If they act professionally by not putting their religion into politics, then their religion is completely irrelevant. But if they try to push it in, then I would feel uncomfortable if somebody from a very conservative religious group holds such a position of power.
Permalink Reply by Abreo on March 23, 2012 at 9:48pm I see what you mean now, but their religion will always impact their behavior and their beliefs so it's impossible for them to separate the two. Whether or not they're being unprofessional [in that regard] is doomed to always be a grey area.
Permalink Reply by Hannah J. S. on March 23, 2012 at 10:55pm I personally am a christian and dont believe what the mormons do. I relize that religion does affect your values and who you are, but in this country, at this momment, I don't think we should care about religion. We all believe diffrent doctrines or none at all. This is Amrica, a place that was basicly made so people could be free to choose religion. Why does it matter. At the most he would be a leader for 8 years. If he made it that long he obviously didnt make anyone too angry and did someting right.
The real thing we should be asking when choosing our leaders is as follows: "What are our country's major problems? Can this person help solve them?" If you believe that because of his/her religion and values that that person could never help our country, why even bother worrying anymore. Just don't vote for them. Thats why we vote.
Permalink Reply by Katherine (Seriously!) on March 25, 2012 at 11:56am Honestly, it really doesn't matter to me if the president is black, white, straight, gay, male, female, Jewish, Mormon, atheist, Satanist, etc, as long as they can comprehensively and competently run the country.
Permalink Reply by Cap'n Brendan Q. on March 29, 2012 at 6:00pm Seeing that you are all but directly referencing Romney, I'd like to provide a few quick historical examples. JFK was a Catholic, and at the time many believed that if he was elected, he would serve the Pope more than he would the American people. This was proven spectacularly false. Richard Nixon was a Quaker, a pacifist religion. However, he supported the Vietnam War. Therefore, a candidate's religion should not matter.
