Nerdfighters

I stand against all the hate and bigotry that ignorant Christians promote in the name of loving their God.
That said, I am about at my wit's end with everyone saying that it is an absolute fact that Christianity opposes homosexuality.
All of the passages used to promote this theory can be refuted. The Bible has been translated countless times by the hopelessly corrupt in order to manipulate the population and distort the original messages for their own purposes.
You are using your religion as an excuse to ostracize a group of people who are just as legitimately people as you are. Very Christ-like of you.

Prove me wrong.
Back me up.

Well, not all Christians are Homophobic, I'm not. I will support you in your stance against people who use religion, which is a vehicle to promote love (at least, that is what I believe) to promote a hate message. Also Correct me if I'm wrong, as Archaeology nor Theology are my chosen fields, but didn't the findings of the Dead Sea Scrolls confirm the relative purity of a quite a few books of the Old Testament? While I believe that the bible is still in what can be called the mostly Original text, it is certainly a book of it's time and not all of its practices can be followed. A Prime Example is the Hating Of Homosexuals.

I'd like to ask the nerdfighters if it is possible to be the following, because this is kind of what I believe.... I think.

1) A Christian.
2) Believing that homesexuality is a sin.
3) Believing that the terrible oppression against homosexuals is a a travesty of our society.
4) Believing that the Scriptures are God's inerrant Word.
5) Believing that people have misused that Word for their own, bigoted, violent, means.
6) That all people deserve my love because of God's love regardless of their gender, race, orientation, or lifestyle.

Is this a viewpoint you could at least live with? I'm not changing any of my beliefs about the subject, but I don't expect you too, either. I still think it would be best if a homosexual would change, but that doesn't mean I have to hate them because of it.

That's what I don't understand about so many Christians. Why is it that just because we disagree with someone we have to hate them? That's not the way Christ operated. That's not the way the Apostles lived, so why do we have to continue that? It seems silly!

Why do you believe homosexuality is a sin?

I'm not certain on the issue, or anything, but I'd like to know another Christian's reasoning.

While I don't agree with your view point on number 2 (or number 4, but that's an entirely different debate), I do condone you for believing in your faith and also believing that people have misused the Bible (and other religious texts) as a means to harm and bigotry. I don't understand why people would believe that homosexuality is a sin, but I do think that if people do, that they hold view points such as your 3, 5 and 6 points.

I believe that homosexuality is a sin just like premarital sex is a sin. In the Bible, marriage is set forth for a few purposes.

1) Procreation. One of the first things God said to Adam and Eve was: Be fruitful. And fruitful they were.

2) Metaphor. Marriage is an illustration for the love God has for us. Although it does condemn adultery, and in old testament texts, commands the stoning of an adulteress, if you read the book of Hosea, you get an entirely different picture. God's people are "married" to him. We have entered into relationship with him, but we have turned away from him. (That's true of all mankind.) We "cheat" on God by looking to other places beside him. Marriage should exist between one man and one woman, as shown in Genesis 1 and all through out the Bible. (Though I realize some of the Patriarchs have multiple wives or concubines, I think it's quite clear that the BEST way, is one man and one woman.) Any sexual relationships outside of that structure of marriage is sin.

I hope that helps you understand my position a little bit more. I realize that many will think I'm foolish for believing the Bible, but I hope that you can respect my opinion (or at least me) none the less.

I don't agree with your opinion, but I understand why you believe what you do. I don't have a problem with you believing that homosexuality is a sin, as long as you don't treat homosexuals poorly because of it.

That's exactly my point. Thank you.

You cannot separate belief from action.
You are your beliefs and they will come through sooner or later.
That's the same kind of ignorance that creates rhetoric like "God doesn't hate gay PEOPLE he hates gay ACTIONS." It's nonsense.
It's not enough that they don't act, they need to stop their illogical hatred because it's destructive.

As being brought up a Roman Catholic, I know the versus of the Bible and therefore see and acknowledge your argument. However, when I said that I don't "understand," I didn't mean it literally. I guess my biggest concern or problem I have with the argument for marriage and against homosexuality is that many people are putting their faith in a book written by a bunch of middle-aged white men who then censored the Bible for things that they never would approve.

Playing devil's advocate, I see your view point and I don't want to lash out at you for it. I respect the fact that you're a Christian and believe in the Word but believe that God loves all, including those who don't fit in the "Bible ways" of life.

My personal beliefs are that there are things in this world that are morally wrong and there are things in this world that aren't. I don't believe in 'sin' just as I don't believe in the Bible. Homosexuality, however, doesn't fall into my morally wrong category. Love is love - man to man, woman to woman or man and woman. That's all I really meant by "I don't understand..."
