After some very contrasting opinions came up over guns in the recent Conservatism thread, I thought the subject could stand its own discussion. So, what do you think of guns in society, and where do you stand on gun control?

I live in the United States, where the right to own a gun is protected by the constitution. I'm from New York, and here very few private citizens own or carry guns. However, I do support the 2nd amendment and consider it among our most important constitutional rights. What do you think?

If they are unable to use a gun because of disability then for them this is a non issue. Taser and pepperspray isn't enough to hold off an attacker. It just isn't enough.  A gun will work just fine.

"It just isn't enough" isn't an argument. A taser will knock someone unconsious. How is that not enough?

tasers don't knock people unconsious they stun them for a few seconds and then not all the time.

You can pull th

e trigger again but the guy might have pulled the lead out. It isn't good enough. (and yes it is an argument) If you need more firepower then you need more. Those aren't enough. You have the right and responsibility to defend yourself and your family with deadly force if necessary.

That's a lower setting. Tasers can and do knock people unconsious.

Not an argument. An opinion

Deadly force, yes, but the equipment to use that deadly force should NOT include a gun

I totally disagree with you. You finally said that deadly force might be needed but why not a gun if deadly force is needed.

Because a gun is too powerful. It puts you in a position to threaten more people .

Which is why it is a good tool to defend yourself and your family.

No, it's not. It gives an individual too much ability. A knife or taser is a fine defense. A gun can too easily become offensive. A gun has too much power to allow for a safe defense.

So when you defend yourself you ought to use a less effective means of doing so even if that gives your attacker a greater chance of success?

The reasoning isn't to do with self defense, it's to do with the safety of everyone at large. If everyone has guns, the world at large becomes more dangerous, not less.

Vertigo your OPINION that tasers and knives are good enough is wrong in my OPINION. To me my opinion is worth more than your opinion, to me. I  will vote my way and hope we outvote you and yours. I hope you never have to live in a neighborhood where you don't feel safe. I have lived in such a neighborhood. Quite frankly we needed a gun. We had to worry about gangs.

Latch, do you not see the ilogcial nature of what you are saying. If no one has guns, no one has reason to feel in danger. Following your logic, every country in the world would have to have a nuclear weapon.
