Adam!?

Hank, I'm very disappointed in you for not knowing what Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is about.

In the newest Truth or Fail, you say that the John Lennon-penned Beatles song was about LSD. Not at all. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was about a drawing by Julian Lennon of a little girl named Lucy. John asked Julian what the picture was called, Julian answered "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and the rest is history. The fact that it spelled out LSD was pure coincidence. Lucy Vodden whom the picture was based on recently died of lupus sadly. Her death received quite a bit of publicity which makes me even more surprised that you still thought it was about LSD.

And according to the animators of The Lion King, the famous "SEX" animation frame actually says "SFX". People tell stories to make themselves sound like they aren't assholes every day, just because one is told by someone famous doesn't mean it's true.

But several Beatles songs WERE about drugs and they have admitted to this, songs such as "She Said, She Said" and "I Am the Walrus." It's no crime to say that a song is about drugs and nothing to lie about (especially during that time period), this one just happened to be about a drawing of a little girl.

Amen Brother. I thought the same thing. That was the only one I got wrong.

I got that wrong, too. Then, since I wanted to know Hank's rationale, I went back and clicked on the other link. He said that John Lennon did say that it was about Julian's picture, but in 2004 Paul McCartney clearly stated that it was about LSD. This still brings up the point that since there is no way to know for sure who is lying, Hank should not have used Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds as one of the questions.

i completely agree.

I got it right (wrong?) because I knew Puff was just about a dragon. But I believed the LSD story. I've just been to Snopes.com and the whole thing is totally debunked - there is even a quote by Paul that it was just a coincidence that Julian's drawing (included!) and quote added up to LSD.

But Snopes names the classmate Lucy O'Donell, and there is no mention of her dying of Lupus. Is this an urban legend within an urban legend?

No, her name when the song was written was O'Donnell but she married and changed her name to Vodden. She only died 12 days ago which is why snopes has not updated.

Also in reply to Leanne, Paul McCartney did not write the song. Yes, the song is credited to Lennon/McCartney but only Lennon wrote it so McCartney's view on the song should not be valid.

Is there any reason it can't be both?

I wouldn't say it was inspired by LSD. I pretty much believe the story, but more importantly, it is a good song and I don't care that much about how it came into existance. But saying that there is no chance that portions of this song weren't influeced by LSD makes me think that none of you have actually gone and read the lyrics to that song. Hank was close enough, give him a break.
