How do you organize your books?

I own about 500 books, all packed into my tiny room. My shelves don't leave much room for creativity, so I cannot use the celebrated 'color-gradient' organizing method. I've opted for a rough category system instead. Librarything.com helped me out a lot!

These are my current categories:

-reference
-fantasy / urban fantasy
-sci-fi
-'real' literature (classics / modern classics)
-nonfiction
-poetry
-books about books/writing
-historical fiction
-YA
-YA authors who are friends (John / Maureen / E. Lockhart / Scott Westerfeld / David Levithan, etc.)


How do you organize your home libraries, nerdfighters?

Well I can't say that my collection is big enough for a home library, so with around 30 books, I just place them in height order. I love your last category, 'YA authors who are friends'. Neat.

I also organize by height. It's an aesthetically pleasing way to order bookds.

Generally by topic, then alphabetical within each

-children's
-philosophy
-art
-textbooks
-cookbooks
-fiction
-literature

Bascally I throw them all over the place.
I have like three disorganised bookcases and one clutterd floor

Yep that's my sister and I who share a room. Books everywhere.

God, I have nowhere near that many books.
Right now mine are organized by color because I thought that would look better than alphabetizing them. Within that they're somewhat in height order.

I'm so jealous! Like I said, I don't have the shelf space for color organization. But I love the look!

then on a different book shelf is poetry and plays
and then over by my music, i have my books about music, as in like, biographies, and reference things

but i just started moving furniture around, so now everything is all messed up.

I kind of like to have an unorganized bookshelf, I keep it tidy, but I don't have my book selections in a certain order.

My small collection is grouped by author, then height. And in the case of all the small paperbacks I have, they are alphabetized by title. There's also some smaller groups like Movie Adaptions and Subject Matter.
