How do you organize your books?

I own about 500 books, all packed into my tiny room. My shelves don't leave much room for creativity, so I cannot use the celebrated 'color-gradient' organizing method. I've opted for a rough category system instead. Librarything.com helped me out a lot!

These are my current categories:

-reference
-fantasy / urban fantasy
-sci-fi
-'real' literature (classics / modern classics)
-nonfiction
-poetry
-books about books/writing
-historical fiction
-YA
-YA authors who are friends (John / Maureen / E. Lockhart / Scott Westerfeld / David Levithan, etc.)


How do you organize your home libraries, nerdfighters?

I don't believe in organising. Anarchy and chaos! At least for the books :P My books are all over the place. Stuffed in my two books cases, in boxes under my bed, other people's houses, locker at school, although I had to clean that out last friday so those are currently residing on a chair. I need more room.

Since i'm obsessed with horses, that gets a section all unto itself. Then, they just decend in size order. I like to keep series and types of books together. For example, I have all 6 of my Clique books (which i'm TRYING to sell) together. All of my manga is grouped together and my manga is catagorized alphabetically with the series together. There's a pile of books next to my bookcase for books i haven't read yet. On top of my bookcase, i have a large pile of magazines and other random artifacts, such as a Barbaro TY beanie baby. I need more space, though...

I just kinda shove them where they fit, since my shelf is tiny compared to my book collection. Plus I use my sister's bookshelf =P
There's no room to organise them any other way, although I do try to keep series such as Harry Potter together.

Alphabetically, by author. I have this crazy OCD book-organizing thing. XD

My books are organized in the following manner:

Any free shelf space for books that I am currently not reading;

Any free desk/table/purse/car/floor(bedside only) space for those that I am reading, or pursuing.

I have attempted to organize them before; I don't think it lasted a full 24 hours.

Ironically, they are all organized on LibraryThing. :D

i don't really have categories. to sort through all my books it would take days and i don't have that kind of time sadly =[

i have a special bookshelf where i put al my vc andrews books, shakespeare, robert jordan, terry brooks and john green.

then i have another bookshelf that goes three rows back and has four shelves for all of the books i can't find a place for.

i have a bookshelf for kinds books and young adult books, and another for historical literature and stuff on the royal family and the like. and my chaucer books are there too for some reason.

then i have odds and ends stacked on my dresser because they won't fit anywhere else.

I have mine in categories:

-Fiction by genre (war, cultural, travel, all the way down to YA at the end)
-Memoirs/Biographies (arguably my largest section)
-Reference by genre (gender/sexuality, psychology, travel, etc)
-Philosophy

I have somewhere around 610 books, all in my room too. I have 3 shelving units, wall shelves, and a few stacks on flat surfaces that haven't been organized in yet or are currently in use.
