I need advise on how to start a D&D Campaign

Hey All,

So, I've always wanted to do a D&D campaign, but the only one I ever tried playing was one done by a DM that simply didn't have the time or desire to make a really good campaign for us.  I'd like to make an entire world, where every country, state, and city are mapped out.  I want NPC's to actually mean something other than decoration.  I want each person they talk to to have a quest linked to them... but I've never done this before.

 

Do  any of you wonderful Nerdfighters have any good advice on where to start and what to watch out for?

P.S.

I'm expect a lot of flack from some of you who think doing anything of this sort is lame, and I'm cool with that, but please keep it to a minimum, I'd like some good advice.
