that I've been watching the vlog brothers for years and never really been a part of nerdfighteria? I feel like I'm not cool enough to be a nerdfighter, and by cool enough I clearly mean that I dont feel like I'm political or activist enough to be a nerdfighter. anyone else feel this way?

If Nerdfighting were about being political or being an activist I'd never would have become one. These are just a very small part of Nerdfighteria... meaning, lot's of Nerdfighters are interested in that kind of stuff, but its not in the least required to become a Nerdfighter. In general, Nerdfighters are people who are inspired to be awesome by... well, anything.

It's not about politics and activism, its about awesome! And awesome can be applied and used in so many different ways.

Well, you don't even really need to be a Nerdfighter to be a part of this community. I'm here, and don't identify myself as a Nerdfighter. I don't care about awesome, only about reducing suck, and haven't watched a single Vlog brothers video. Also, believing that because I identify myself with a certain element of counter-culture makes me automatically be something i.e. nerdfighter=awesome, seems actually pretty lame.

I'll be honest, your post greatly confuses me. I think that nerdfighters aren't about being countercultural, it's about being happy about who you are. I don't see how you want to fight world suck but don't care about awesome. Awesome is what is left over when world suck goes away. I'm not trying to debate you, I think I'm just trying to understand your post.

it did me too... being a part of this community makes you a nerdfighter theyre pretty synonymous arent they? i mean by believing that I'm a nerdfighter by proxy i do also automatically become awesome. what i took from spiderboenz post what something i believed in middle school about labels and labels not identifying me and how much cooler i was because i was a nonconformist

I believe his complaint is with specific nerdfighters who constantly brag about how awesome they are all the time. Sometimes people who fight to decrease world suck become smug little douches about it, and sometimes when people are part of a community like this they become smug little douches without doing anything. (You could say they are really happy with themselves)

 

On a side note, awesome really loses all meaning when you overuse and abuse it. Nerdfighters should learn other words for something they like. You can't fight for awesome if it doesn't mean anything.

Try watching a vlogbrothers video sometime. You'll see it's not just blabbering about awesomeness. They talk about real issues in the world and put on Project for Awesome every year, raising thousands and thousands of dollars for a variety of different charities. If that's not decreasing world suck, I don't know what is.
