Nerdfighters

Been thinking about how so many people are indifferent to everything that's happening, even in their own lives. Mostly I've been thinking about genocide due to school projects and topics, but I've realized that it applies to most everything that's wrong. How can people not care when other human beings are being tortured, raped, killed, etc.? How can we get people to care? I really need some help with this, so please discuss, offer suggestions, anything. Let's change the way we fix the world.

Allie suggested a sort of Project for Awesome day, but instead of charities, we focus on volunteer work instead. The focus would be on Youtube, and those of us that upload videos could talk about how we volunteer, how others could volunteer, etc. Please keep the suggestions coming, this is really great ^.^

Without elaborating very much,
the simple answer is this (in my limited opinion/experience):
People will not care
about how other people exist
until it becomes personal.

Then how do we make it personal?

Intimidate them?
Scare them?
Horrify them?

We'd need something else

I think playing on people's sympathy works better, because it's truly awful and they should know.

Threaten them.
With a big spade.
Only joking.
Kind of.

"Care about people or I will bludgeon you! D^:<"

Not everyone will care, but there are plenty of people who devote their lives to helping strangers, and countless more who donate to charity in an effort to help alleviate suffering.

What else can we do?

I'm not saying that people aren't doing things to help, there are, but as long as things like genocide and racism and abuse continue, there is always a need for more people to help and more strategies to be planned. Always.

That could work, but I'm not sure.....

This might sound a little cold, but...
Those people that have horrible things happen to them, they have families and friends of their own to care about them. What purpose does it serve for us to feel horrible about something that's happened to someone we've never met?

I mean, It's not like I'm saying we should just brush genocide, rape, torture and murder off, but I think we should focus energy on preventing further disaster rather than bother mourning what's already been done.

But maybe that's not what you're talking about, in which case, never mind.

I'm not talking about mourning, I'm talking about action. Action requires more than casual attention and indifference. These things are taking place right NOW, to real people, with real feelings just like us. I just want to do something about it. Any ideas?

Actually, if you think about it, alot of these people going through any of this, don't have others to help them through those times. Like the orphans that result from genocides, wars etc. They live without any care or affection and no one thinks about them. They don't have anyone.
