Legit music?

So the other day I lent my friend my flash drive because there's music that he has on his iTunes that I want. So, he puts some albums on it and I get it back and put the songs on my iTunes. I later found out from him that within his thousands of songs he has on his iTunes, he actually paid for little of them.

I want to know if there's a way to check if the music files have been torrented or illegally obtained (besides asking him, I'm sure he doesn't know), and if they have been obtained with such methods, could I get in trouble and be charged with a fine for having this music?

It probably is illegal, but if everyone who downloaded illegal music got fined, no one would have any money. I try not to do it, pretty much everyone I know does and no one has ever gotten in trouble for it.
