Every time I'm on the computer I'll be looking at music I like ( rap if you were wondering ) and my dad will come in the room and start completely bashing my music.He is always like how do you listen to that it's noise it's not music!To which I reply do I complain about your stupid music.I hate when people say stuff like that because a lot of work went into that "noise" and,yes I do realize some rap not exactly has any meaning put into it but the majority of rap I listen to has some type of meaning or point.What I'm trying to get across here is that any genre of music has its greats and it's failures but don't judge a genre of music by its failures and stereotypes but by its meaning and cause.

I agree with you. So many people judge whole genres of music based on their personal preference. The main reason this annoys me is that it's just plain ignorant. People need to think and realize that their opinions aren't automatically universally correct. Every person has a preference and every genre has stereotypes. We can't label a genre as "crap" or "noise" based on either of these things.

I thought this was going to be an Aaron Sorkin inspired bitch-fest. On one hand I'm fairly disappointed it isn't but on the other hand I would be terrified to meet someone who actually liked The Newsroom and took everything in it to heart.

Anyways you grew up with your dad's music existing, he didn't grow up with your music existing. That doesn't mean he can't like it but it does increase the possibility that he will hear it and immediately assume it's crap. It's something you just have to deal with I guess. Not much you can do.

I think you are completely right. I am a musician and even though I play specific genres, I like all music. And it's completely okay NOT to like a certain song or style of music, but the POINT of music, I believe, is to help release emotions and tap into something bigger than yourself. (Sorry for sounding like a tool, but It's true). So people like different genres because that's what they relate to. Therefore, I find it unfair to judge people harshly on their tastes in music because in a way, you are judging them as a person too. Everyone is unique, and that's what makes human life so 'special'. Obviously, 7 billion completely unique individuals are going to have different tastes in music. If you don't like it, suck it up and get over it. :)

I agree with you. People are allowed to like whatever they want. I listen to lots of different music. From electro to Bob Dylan to musicals and disney soundtracks. When you judge someone else's music taste you are saying that your music tatse is better. when you put it like that it just sounds ridiculous, music is very personal and we all should respect each other's taste. But I am realistic enough to understand that that would only happen in some kind of utopia.

People fear and hate the unknown, and the new. We are all, in our youth, imprinted with the idea as to what is music, what is sex, what is food, what is good, and what is bad, etc. Everything not fitting in those modes of thought is rejected and feared. Most people fear and hate the gays because they don't know any gays, and all their info about them comes from anti-gay sources.

I suggest you try and change your mind about his ''stupid music''. If you cant, then how can you expect it of him? And if you do, I'm sure it would give you ideas about how to present rap in the right way to your father, thus changing his mind.

I was watching a movie from the thirties about these rebellious young people who would -gasp!- play big band swing music and had to fight against the strictly classical head of a music school to get the chance to perform, and it reminded me of this. I think that each generation takes music in a different direction, and the old generation is always going to disapprove, because people don't generally like change. I suspect that in sixty years I'll be yelling at my grandkids to turn down the dang music.

most people cant handle the evolution of music.

i mean we invest a good amount of time in finding the music we like within the first quarter to half of our life's, we memorize it and in some regard place it on a pedestal as something great.

then as music progresses, gets more complex or remixed (in a variety of different ways) we fell like that thing that we spent so much time looking for and memorizing is being disrespected...which is where the anger comes from.

and this is true of any generational gap...kinda makes me think of what music was like before records and how different the beetles where and how different rap was and how different dub step is...

its all music.

there's not really a point to this post...just felt like sharing my thoughts.
