Nonfiction book recommendations?

So part of my summer reading assignment for my English class is to read a nonfiction book. Does anyone have any really great books that you'd recommend?

What kind of nonfiction? There's a lot of territory to cover there. Most recent great read, if you don't mind disaster fiction, Ship Ablaze: The Tragedy of the Steamboat General Slocum.
