Nerdfighters

I am doing a final project In my college Museum Studies class on the curation of objects and information. We need to have a guiding idea and my Idea is “Safe Places.”I could really use some help from a larger community.

What places make us feel really safe? Is it the cupboard under the sink when we were kids or tucked up under the covers? Was it a onetime thing, safe from a storm or is it a place you go back to whenever you are insecure? What I would like is for you to choose a place that makes you feel safe now or did make you feel safe as a kid, then get a picture, or make a drawing or other artwork of this place, if you can include a short written statement of why this place made you feel safe, or what you felt safe from. If you just want to write about it that is fine as well. Please be creative and feel free to think outside the box. Also encourage friends and family of all ages to participate, I am hoping for a wide range of responses.

Digital files can be sent to: Safeplaces2012@gmail.com

All of this information should be anonymous, or able to be displayed anonymously, and I will be posting it on a website, most likely a Tumblr blog. Please understand that by sending me all art, photography and writing you are giving me permission to use these things online and for my class, I will try to use them respectfully, If you don’t want them shown please let me know or just don’t send them.

If I could get the submissions by May 25th, 2012 so I can use them for my final that would be great but please feel free to send them in after that, I want to keep this project going. Sorry about the short notice.

Thank you so much for your participation,
Erika Hinze

Some questions we might all be thinking:

What file formats do you accept?

Are you going to keep us updated?

Will people be able to comment on the blog, or collaborate after the assessment is marked/sorted out?

Does it matter if the artwork or story has already appeared, or will appear later, in another publishing medium or exhibition at the discretion of the artist/author?

my preferred file formats are jpeg, or tiff, something small enough to go through email.

I can keep updates on this forum for anyone who participates.

I am planning to make this into a Tumbler account so you should be able to leave comments on entries.how exactly the collaboration opportunities work will depend partly on how the project grows.

I would like to avoid any issues with copyright so I only want art and stories that are from the author themselves but I don't see why the work can't be used in another medium after a copy has been sent to me. I am not paying you for rights or anything so the work still belongs to who ever made it and they have the right to use it where they like.

I hope that was helpful, I tried to answer the questions the best I could.

Thank you for asking, I'm sorta new to some of this internet community stuff, and this is the first time I've tried a collaborative project, I can use all the help and positive suggestions I can get.

Thanks for the answers.

I haven't collaborated much really so I kind of suck at giving advice on that, but, the main thing is, I guess is to just do what you can and see what happens?

well, all your questions were good points. thanks for the feed back.

no worries.  hope it goes well!

If any one is interested in seeing what I came up with the link is http://safeplaces2012.tumblr.com/

If you find you still want to add your safe place I will keep the project going. email or submit on the tumblr.

Thanks,

Erika
