Nerdfighters

So, I got this idea to get Nerdfighteria together and write a movie.  Who will make the movie?  We will figure that out later.

I can keep track of the official draft.  People can write ideas and even whole scenes for this movie.  We can discuss characters and how they should interact and change over the movie.  The finished product doesn't even need to be that great (in fact it probably won't be), but it just needs to be fun to make and write, so we have a complete film that was written, produced and directed by Nerdfighters (does John or Hank feel like making a cameo?).

So, anyway, before we can start writing we need an idea.  Should it be romantic?  Action packed?  Give your thoughts below.

September 11, 2011  (Guide to the Unnamed Nerdfighter Collaborative Movie Project (UNCMP)

This list should hold most every idea discussed about this film in this thread so far. If you see anything missing or inaccurate on this list, let me (Vince T) know and I will do my darndest to fix it during the next update.

If an idea receives a good deal of interest, it will automatically be moved to the ‘liquids’ list.

If you think something that has seen a fair deal of discussion deserves to be in the film, feel free to propose moving it to the ‘solids’ list. If it sees enough support, it will be moved.

Main Characters

-Lincolnstein: Cross of Albert Einstein and Abraham Lincoln (possible time traveling accident) who is nefarious. Kidnaps babies from the evil baby orphanage to start his "Dangerous Formation of the Terrible Baby Army".

-Willy Bubbles the Nerdfighting Puppy Pirate & Jerry the Tap-dancing Duck Ninja: leaders of the Pirate and Ninja factions (respectively) that are constantly at war on the island. The two share a deep animosity for one another. Will probably have a big face-off at the end.

-Jenga: Female protagonist. A clever young lady who is new to the island. Has a plot point attached to her that takes advantage of a metaphor tied into the physical/mental skill game she shares her name with. Has a penchant for witty fun dialogue.

-Dorian: Male love interest. Time traveling nerd-hunk ala Doctor (take your pick of Doctor iterations). Just as sharp as Jenga at least when it comes to snappy dialogue.

-Mark Taylor: committed worker for the evil baby orphanage
-Natalie Spiegelman: a passionate girl with issues of trust

Once the first scene is written, and as we see how the story is set up, we will decide on the next section.

Problem: HANK HASN'T SEEN AVPM!!!

And @Gabriella, I also have a character crush on Dorian, which is why I want to play Jenga. (But I'm too young,  so I'm hoping it takes a few years to write this and get all of the stuff together.)

i am fond of dorian. and jenga, and even licolnstein. a hero is a hero, but everyone loves a good villain.

oh and i vote yes on the nerd shirts

Lincolnstein doesn't seem to be such a bad guy to me  http://stein.cshl.org/~lstein/
Hey, he works at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. I went there for a school trip in the fifth grade. (also: where did you find this guy???)
Glad I'm not alone I thought I was weird having a crush on a hypothetical character. :D

Not to mess with anyone's imagination, but when I imagine Dorian, I kind of think of the guy from this short:  http://vimeo.com/23110704

by the by, has anyone considered writing random bits of character lines? Just to give our characters some personality traits to try on.

Example:

[Earlier, at New Arrivals Orientation]

Hal [a tall fellow, who is Jenga's imposing new boss] hands Jenga a sizable booklet.

Hal: Try to fill  this up before you leave.

Jenga turns it about in her hand for a moment while asking

Jenga: What is...?

Hal: [sharply] A journal.

    Jenga looks puzzled

Hal: And for the sake of originality, don't do that 'dear diary' cliche

[Later, In Jenga's dorm]

Jenga drops chest down onto her bed with a sigh, she flips open her journal and starts writing

Jenga [narration]: Dear...

She pauses from writing/narrating to look up into space.

She thinks for a moment before shrugging and writing

Jenga [narration]: Dear Mastadon...I feel odd about writing in you. Not that there's anything wrong with you, it just seems weird to confide in a stack of lined paper when I could just as easily tell my webcam and 40 million of her closest friends.

I like Hal. He is like Cave Johnson from Portal 2 in my mind :)

I'm kinda playing with a little exchange between Dorian and Jenga.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jenga: I'm Jenga.

Dorian: Dorian.

Jenga: Dorian? What kinda name is Dorian?

Dorian: I don't know, I guess my parents just liked Oscar Wilde.* What kinda name is Jenga?

Jenga: I don't know, I guess my parents just liked board games.

Dorian: Jenga doesn't have a board.

Jenga: True. I am named after a board-less board game. I kinda like the sound of that.

Dorian: As do I. It sounds like it should be a metaphor for something.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that got me thinking about Jenga and metaphors (is a sentence I never thought I'd say). I think that, maybe, the game Jenga could be a metaphor for the character. Something about the pieces being built up and falling down, or something like that. Maybe that could be a theme throughout the movie. Maybe. I'm just throwing an idea out there.

*(author's writer's note: I did not know what kinda name is Dorian, so I looked it up and discovered that The Picture of Dorian Gray was an Oscar Wilde novel. I still am not sure if that novel had anything to do with the naming of this character.)

I love your dialogue, it's clever but not just there for a comedic purpose as we really get to see their chemistry and personalities. I also assumed that Dorian's name came from the novel (which I never read) but I highly doubt he shares any character traits as he isn't vain and all that.

@Vince, that is kinda how I imagined him. When you first told him about us you described him to be Doctor-esque. Personally i think he is very character crush-able, lol.

Brilliant, dialogue there, I'd love it if this could make it into the final draft.

The name came from the same character, but in his interpretation in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.  Really, it was just a name picked for its Victorian classiness. I originally thought of Fitzwilliam/Darcy  from Pride & Predjudice but it sounded far too old-timey to fit a modern character, whereas Dorian still has mobility in current times.

Yeah, I think when I have kids, I'll name them Dorian and Jenga.
