Nerdfighters

This is the e-mail I sent John on 9 August.
I just got a great idea...
Well, I thought it was great...

Okay, so I'm on Skype with Katie the Ningmaster and a few others. I asked one of them who'd just entered the chat how they were and he said "I'm well. Also hungry. How are you?" And I said "I'm hungry and well, too. Let's meet up at IHOP, cha?"

And then we started wishing that we lived closer together so we could do stuff like that. Someone said we should all move to Chicago and call it Nerdfighter Town. That's great and all, but because you're writing a book on deserted islands... all the Nerdfighters should pitch together money so we can buy a deserted island and then you could use it for research and it could be named Nerdfighteria and then we could all live there and it would be made of awesome... I'm like extremely excited about this. Hence the run-on sentence. Let me know what you think!

C'mon Nerdfighters. How bloody cool would that be if we actually did that? I know it'd take time and effort. Some of us might even die out before it comes real. But I'm incredibly enthusiastic that it can happen. If you believe it can happen, then it can. What do you say? Want to make it real? Yeah? No? Thoughts?

Think of it... What started as a yearlong project between brothers turns into a web sensation, turns into a worldwide community, turns into an actual place you can visit.

Please don't be mean to me... I only had a dream.

PS- I'm looking for private islands for sale, lovies.

Oh, puppy sized elephants are next on my list of things to make a reality. Just you wait. :)
Don't worry, I haven't read them all, and I pointed out problems as well.

Well, for housing, there could be large apartment buildings that could house numerous people. Shops would mainly be in the resort, which I guess could be something like a mall as well. As for electricity, we could use wind or hydro power, or generators.

Well, that's just my guess.
Definitely, that's why I never really addressed things like shops or electricity before. Maybe we could start a petition and ask the Greens to spearhead a campaign to start the nation of Nerdfigheria. That way, we can get donations as well.
i agree with the idea that we should buy florida
We were thinking of making it a resort/nation like Monaco. (Thanks Cyril)
How will we get money? Kind, rich Nerdfighters. Donate to a fund, however much and whenever you can. I know this'll take a while, but it'll happen eventually.

If the island is big enough, a small airport can be on there. Or, if it's close enough to other land, boats can travel to and fro.

Jobs? Well, one of them would be the resort. Farmers, business people, decorators... yadda yadda. Nerdfighters have many talents and they would be displayed all over the nation.

Houses? There might be a few, I didn't even think of that yet. ha

Electricity, Australian Jacob knows some way that would be possible... and for drinkable water too. :)
Question: did we ever decide how we'd be going about actually GETTING the island? Are we having it built, or are we purchasing land that already exists? Are we building it ourselves, and if so, what sort of equipment and expertise are involved?
I think it's established the only sane way would be to purchase it. There's tons of uninhabited islands in this world.

I proposed that we get John and Hank to make it an official Nerdfighter project, and ask for donations so that we can at least buy a large-ish island.
Yeah, I've linked Hank and John to both this discussion and the one Cyril started. So hopefully they'll see it and start some sort of fund/official project for us.
Thanks; I was getting worried we were planning on building one, Saudi-prince-with-a-dream-style, by plopping sand into the ocean, which sounded difficult.
(Okay, I can't think of any Saudi princes who actually did that, but someone in Dubai built a to-scale map of islands in the shape of all the continents.)

Island building is rather easy with a firm seafloor. You gotta start watching science channel.

Jobs? Authors and professional internet morons, of course. Computer work and writing can be taken anywhere, so now we have those in addition to the resort and such.
bahahaa. nice. :)
