In Plato's Republic, there wasn't a place for music.

In the Charter of Carnaro- a constitution built on Anarchist, Socialist, and Proto-Fascist foundations, music was designated the fundamental principle of the state.

What do you think the place of music is in society? Do you agree with Plato, that music is detrimental to civilization, or are you with Gabriele D'Annunzio, that music is the step towards an enlightened humanity? Do you agree with neither? Speak your mind.

If that's not a step towards an enlightened humanity, i don't know what is.

The only metal I seem to enjoy is Mastodon, maudlin of the Well, and Buckethead.

Now go tell every fan of Sonic Youth or Merzbow that noise isn't music.

I personally don't like metal, but I'm in no place to judge your preferences. I know how much it angers me when others say bad things about the bands I listen to. I mean, I wouldn't mind that they don't like it, but just plain saying the band sucks is rediculous. Good music is nothing but opinions.

All kidding aside,i think music is a wonderful art form, and while im not sure if it will "enlighten humanity", it is incredibly entertaining, and as i said, beautiful art

The intention of any art is to enlighten in some form or another. All art is provocative; it elicits either an emotional or mental response, and if that response is something new or not previously considered, then you have been enlightened in at least some small way. The real growth comes from digging deeper into why you felt something when listening to a particular piece of music, or what about it makes you think, and what do those thoughts and feelings lead to? Do they inspire you? Do they anger you? Is it enough to make you act?

Whether or not music SHOULD have a place in society, it does, and it makes an impact.
