The first man to cross America (Pacific to Atlantic Ocean) in an automobile was Horatio Nelso Jackson. He did it in 1903 and his car is displayed at the Smithsonian. He was one of the most romantic people I've ever watched a documentary on. (I also highly recommend the documentary, called Horatio's Drive: America's First Road Trip).

The giant turtle didn't get a scientific name until 300 years after it was first discovered. Because the people who was supposed to get it always ended up eating it before they returned.

A "googolplex" (that big freaking number you may have used when you were a little kid) is a real number and represents 10^10^100. It is called a googolplex because mathematician Edward Kasner let his 9 year old nephew name his big new number.

Google is supposedly a misspelling of the number googol, which is odd because it's easier to associate it with goggles, which would also make more sense...

The length from your elbow to your wrist is the size of your foot.

I know such obscure facts as the highest point in Suriname, and that it has a surprisingly large Indian immigrant population.

If we replaced the Sun with the biggest known star in the universe, then Uranus would be the first planet orbiting it.
