Nerdfighters

Inside an animal shelter, healthy, loving pets wait for a family. For the lucky ones, going home with a new family can be the best day of their lives. "I Need Love" music and lyrics courtesy of Daylight for Deadeyes.

If you have your heart set on a specific breed and such a dog does not show up at your shelter you should consider adopting through a breed rescue group.

If you don't think you are ready to give a dog a "forever home" perhaps you can help out the shelter by fostering a dog.

And don't fall into the trap of giving because you can just save one dog. Your act of kindness will mater very much to this one dog.

I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a dog when I move out, thanks for this. I'll check out nearby shelters when the time comes :)

This is my shelter kitty, he is just a big puff ball of love in the mornings. His eyes are closed because he is purring like a outboard motor.

If you are willing to be patient and really look around at different shelters you end up finding the perfect personality for you, which is more important than nose shape or whatever.

I would, if I could have a pet now.We have always had dogs from the pound.

we got our dog from a good home wanted ad. he would probably have ended in the pound otherwise.

Every year, 3 million healthy, adoptable pets are euthanized. And did you know that every year 8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters? It is such a sad statistic. Luckily, The Shelter Pet Project hopes to change this! The Shelter Pet Project is a new campaign, sponsored by The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie’s Fund, and the Ad Council, that hopes to reverse this trend and find homes for these homeless, lovable pets.
The Shelter Pet Project

The campaign has one unified goal, to increase pet adoption. They hope to reach the 17 million people who plan on getting a new pet this year, letting them know that shelters are the first and best place to find animal companions.

The Shelter Pet Project also has an awesome website with pet adoption resources, and also some great interactive media, like Pet Personals and an Adopt-A-Gram to help spread the word about this project.

Here is one of the great PSAs that The Shelter Pet Project has out to spread the word. Let's help make adoption the first option!
