If we went back in time to before humans there were no animals that we would call dogs. I think that is what she meant. So... In a way, we are responsible for their existing, in my opinon anyway.

If we took a modern day dog, and went back in time and found a pre-human dog, the two of them would be able to produce successful offspring, meaning that even before humans they were still Canis familiaris.

There were no pre-human dogs as I know it. The first Canis familiaris appeared around 1500 years ago but Homo Sapiens evolved between 500,000 and 250,000 years ago. That is a big difference.
P.S. The Grey Wolf; Canis Lupus evolved about 100,000 years ago, so don't go down that route either.
