Nerdfighters

because of the recent events concerning Islam(i.e Ground-zero mosque, 9/11, Qur'an book burning, etc.) I began to wonder if we westerners really know anything about Islam and its beliefs. It seems to me that all we actually know comes from things we have heard about, like terrorists, women's oppression, and other things like that, that have come from Islamic countries and then we tend to associate all that with the religion. Is our popular knowledge about Islam true? It's not like people take the time to crack open the Qur'an and read its contents, Islamic beliefs isn't widely studied here and barely anyone takes the time to learn about it. Just like to hear your thoughts

dude...i just said i don't want gender equality...

to Fatchen khalifa,

What do you think the roles of men and woman should be? In what ways do you want to be equal and what ways do you not want to be equal? Also, how are your ideas about this informed by your religion?   This is actually interesting because one of the main negative ideas people have about Islam in the west is that it is oppressive to woman.

So what do you want, because if it's gender superiorty for women, your not getting it.
good, because i don't want it.
Jeez dude, lay off the hashish.

Islam, as in the word itself, means PEACE in Arabic.

"Islam" means submission to God. I'm all for you educating people on why Islam isn't scary, but you oughtn't misrepresent it. >.>

umm, im pretty sure islam means peace...

the word islam comes from salam, and salam means peace.

no, your fucking wrong. it means submission as in to god.

it would be nice if we could be respectful towards each other and have a bit of civil discourse, at least in nerdfighteria.

Islam (submission) and salam (peace) share a root, S-L-M, which means 'whole, safe, in tact'.

i SPEAK arabic! I know what it means.
I speak English, that doesn't make me an expert in the etymology of every word in the dictionary.
You're missing the point!
