What does the west know about Islam

because of the recent events concerning Islam(i.e Ground-zero mosque, 9/11, Qur'an book burning, etc.) I began to wonder if we westerners really know anything about Islam and its beliefs. It seems to me that all we actually know comes from things we have heard about, like terrorists, women's oppression, and other things like that, that have come from Islamic countries and then we tend to associate all that with the religion. Is our popular knowledge about Islam true? It's not like people take the time to crack open the Qur'an and read its contents, Islamic beliefs isn't widely studied here and barely anyone takes the time to learn about it. Just like to hear your thoughts

If we actually knew more we wouldn't have this problem. America is mostly ignorant. We're not aloud to teach religion in public schools, UNLESS we teach other religions just the same, and we teach them like a subject rather than a teacher trying to convert a student. In that situation it's ok. So more schools should do just that. Teach children in school, maybe around a highschool freshman level, about christianity, hinduism, buddhism and maybe a few others. It gets kids to not only think about life, but also we learn about other people. This is one of the first steps to world peace.

SO many people only found out about Islam through 911. Islam, as in the word itself, means PEACE in Arabic. This religion is magnificent. It makes one feel whole. It is about achieving peace, and seeking knowledge. This religion, isn't hostile, I don't even know why I should be saying that, it goes without saying. All it is, is about--I can't even finish that sentance. It's about so many things. 

Being kind to your neighbor, being healthy-mentally, physically, and spiritually, and just being a good person.

That's what it's about. It's about being a good and useful person. Islam strongly discourages being a bum all day and just sitting around. It's more than just that. 

 

I HATE i HATE how most people confuse Arabs with Muslims. You humans, there IS a difference. It's sad to say that almost every Arab person that talks about Islam really makes us look bad. You really shouldn't take ANYONES word for it. No one can really explain to you what its like until you experience it for yourself. Istaghfar Allah if I'm wrong, but to me, its way more than just a religion. It's a lifestyle. It's so fulfilling, and wholesome. It really is. Sure, it may be a bit troublesome, what with the five fixed prayers a day but who gives a shit? It is so worth it.

 

Don't take me or anyone else as a representative for Islam (especially not me) because there's no such thing. Our "representative" is the Prophet. I doubt you know anything about him, and to be honest I'm too tired to go into detail because its useless.

it's like that quote: Seeker of truth follow no path all paths lead where truth is here. meaning get off your lazy ass and find out for yourself. Unfortunately not many people care to, but for those who do, i don't kno what to say, thank you.

It will be particularly hard if your a person who's westernized though.

What can i say really, go... Knowledge is power! (one of the other things islam tells us to seek ;) 

 

It's a beautiful religion. and it is a religion, its such a good spiritual experience. I love Islam, and I am a strong believer in Allah. I don't even know what to say, it really is just beautiful, truly.

So Islam is a lot like Christianity; people saying how there are all sorts of wonderful rules and guidelines for being a better person, and then completely ignoring the ones they don't like.
