Stood in firelight, sweltering. Bloodstain on chest like map of violent new continent. Felt cleansed. Felt dark planet turn under my feet and knew what cats know that makes them scream like babies in night. Looked at sky through smoke heavy with human fat and God was not there. The cold, suffocating dark goes on forever and we are alone. Live our lives, lacking anything better to do. Devise reason later. Born from oblivion; bear children, hell-bound as ourselves, go into oblivion. There is nothing else. Existence is random. Has no pattern save what we imagine after staring at it for too long. No meaning save what we choose to impose. This rudderless world is not shaped by vague metaphysical forces. It is not God who kills the children. Not fate that butchers them or destiny that feeds them to the dogs. It’s us. Only us. Streets stank of fire. The void breathed hard on my heart, turning its illusions to ice, shattering them. Was reborn then, free to scrawl own design on this morally blank world. Was Rorschach. Does that answer your questions, Doctor? - Rorschach, Watchmen
Do it? Dan, I'm not a Republic Serial villain. Do you seriously think I'd explain my master-stroke if there remained the slightest chance of you affecting its outcome? I did it thirty-five minutes ago. - Ozymandias, Watchmen.
Yes. Anybody in the world. ..But the world is so full of people, so crowded with these miracles that they become commonplace and we forget... I forget. We gaze continually at the world and it grows dull in our perceptions. Yet seen from the another's vantage point, as if new, it may still take our breath away. Come... dry your eyes, for you are life, rarer than a quark and unpredictable beyond the dreams of Heisenberg. Come, dry your eyes. And let's go home. - Dr. Manhattan, Watchmen
[The Comedian] saw the true face of the 20th century and chose to become a reflection, a parody of it. No one else saw the joke, that's why he was lonely. Heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says "But, doctor...I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains. Fade to black. - Rorschach, Watchmen
Soon there will be war. Millions will burn. Millions will perish in sickness and misery. Why does one death matter against so many? Because there is good and there is evil, and evil must be punished. Even in the face of Armageddon I shall not compromise in this. But there are so many deserving of retribution ... and there is so little time. - Rorschach, Watchmen
"I am not what i think i am and i am not what you think i am, i am what i think you think i am." - Charles Horton Cooley
Permalink Reply by Isabella on November 15, 2011 at 11:41pm Gosh, I absolutely love reading quotes! Found this one yesterday:
"I wish I could show you, when you are lonely or in darkness, the astonishing Light of your own Being." ~Hafiz of Persia
Other favorites include:
"The heart has its reasons which reason does not know." ~Blaise Pascal
"The reason death sticks so closely to life isn't biological necessity - it's envy. Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can." ~Yann Martel, Life of Pi
"What a crazy random happenstance!" ~Dr. Horrible, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog [So many good lines all over this thing!]
"Love is the irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.” ~Oscar Wilde [This guy. Words are better when they come from him.]

Permalink Reply by Arijana M on November 17, 2011 at 5:40am I remember one quote from Samuel Beckett which was mentioned on Criminal Minds. I find it completely and utterly inspirational, yet so simple.
"Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." - Samuel Beckett
Permalink Reply by Ashley Noyes on November 25, 2011 at 10:56pm "For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love." -Carl Sagan
This quote was the theme of my wedding ceremony. And if we're gonna go with Douglas Adams quotes...
Imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, "This is an interesting world I find myself in — an interesting hole I find myself in — fits me rather neatly, doesn't it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!" This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, it's still frantically hanging on to the notion that everything's going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for."

& If anyone has read THE FOUNTAINHEAD, that bit where Henry Cameron yells at Roark about how horrible and arrogant he is, and then tells him to make sure he's at work at 9 o'clock sharp.
