So, i know there are plenty studies on this question by Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland. I would love to hear some Nerdfighteria theories!

while there may be some possible answers, the most obvious being phonetic, as i suspect many of these studies have concluded, there's not supposed to be an answer.  really, the joke is that the hatter is crazy, so he asks questions that he doesn't actually mean, and may not even realize he's asked.

I haven't the slightest idea why a raven is like a writing desk, why would you ask such a question?

I think that it is possible that Lewis Carroll wanted people to think it was a very deep question but it really is a very simple answer, they both begin with the R sound, not that they both start with R it's the sound that matters.

Both have bills :)

There is an actual answer.  

They both produce a note though it is quite flat, and they are nevar put with the wrong end in front.
