Why is it ok for a movie to have sexual references and still retain a PG-13 rating?

Movies where two ppl are naked and in bed with eachother are boosted to R. The movie may not show any parts, but it still has an R rating. At the same time, a movie with just as much exposure can have a PG-13 rating. The main point of ratings is to prevent ppl from being exposed to things that they were previously unaware of. If a movie talks about sex, the viewer will be exposed to the concept. If 2 ppl are about to partake I. Sex, the concept is the same

Lololol

"previously unaware of"

I was aware of sex far prior to my being 13. Far prior.

Movie ratings are screwed up. They don't make any sense to me, at any rate.

Same here. The problem is that there is an age where one is expected to learn of such things. If movies aren't categorized by what is considered an appropriate age to be exposed to something, parents may sue because the movie had content that is not appropriate for a child's age

There shouldn't be. People reach sexual maturity at about twelve, if I'm not mistaken. Not that twelve-year-olds should be having sex, but sex should not be a barred subject matter until that point, and certainly not after.

Parents who sue for things as petty and unreasonable as movie ratings have more problems than their child seeing a person's naked backside.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Movies shouldn't be boosted to R over such petty things. I guess it's fine if there was nudity, but implying things like sex shouldn't be the reason aovie is rated R.
Aovie
*a movie

I thought you were implying that movies insinuating sex should keep an R rating.

Anyway, I agree.

I was challenging the rating system. I feel that if movies are rated r for implying sex, movies that refer to sex should be R swell. I guess you could say that I'm also asking why movies are rated R for implying sex while movies are rated PG-13 for referencing sex
If it references sex people aren't looking at sex. People view viewing fucking as being more naughty than viewing people who are not fucking but just talking about fucking. I guess the visual is a greater turn off for some people (get it? turn off? Sex!)
I think the R rating is stupid.  plain and simple.  There is nothing in an R rated movie that a 13 year old doesnt already know about.  I learned about sex in school by the time i was 12.  I think the R rating is simply for the parents bennifit.
Exactly. The rating is used to let parents be lazy about kids seeing a movie they think is inappropriate instead of screening the movie before hand when many rated R movies are appropriate for some kids. The rating system also keeps parents from suing theaters. The system really isn't for the children viewing the material but for the parents of the children.
If I wanted to defend it I'd say the movie glorifies/stylizes it. That is an argument you might hear anyway. It is oversimplified fallacy and a hypocritical lie wrapped in a double standard. But hey let's not judge it on reality or anything.
well said :)
