Religion is still around because some things are still not explained.

There is still a few things we as a whole do not yet understand completely: For example the beginning of our universe. There are also things they refuse to understand such as evolution and fossil records. Also, it has bee tradition for so long that it is like society's "security blanket."

The very basic point underneath religion is no doubt how the things work. In my understanding people said that something was done by god, when they didn't understand what caused it. Today we unswered a lot of questions, but still where the world comes from? How will it end? Are there parallel universes? While this questions stay withiut an answer religion will exist. I think people that god IS a Universe today. All of it's rules express how the world exists and behaves. I don't think somebody here will argue that the Universe is awesome, glorious and beautiful with all it's fancy physics rules.

because sometimes people just need something to hold on too.

Patronising much? Your basically saying its just the emotional weakness of some? Not the compelling evidence, the well examined logic, and the possibility of alternate philosophical/metaphysical positioning? I think you should really apologise for that gross oversimplification of over 90% of the world's population.

So you claim she doesn't have freedom to think something bad about the outdated rubbish? Except she didn't say it's bad, it's just how things are.

Wow, way out of context. I did not mean religion is a weakness, I was answering the question Johnathan asked on why religion is still around. When I said "sometimes people just need something to hold on too," I meant that at the end of the day the most basic want is to feel hope, and religion gives people that hope. Now, when I say that, of course there are more educated reasoning's then a feeling of hope and belonging, but it is a reason.

In my opinion, I think religion is still around because people want something/someone to believe in. They want to feel cared for and loved even though they may not have actual people caring for them and loving them every second of the day. I think it's kind of like a security blanket or a set of rules for people who honestly just want to live their life by a set of guidelines. But not only that, but it also boils down to fear as well, people may be scared of what happens to them when they die, or what happens to their loved ones, so it may leave some sort of peace that they think/believe that they will be cared for even when their bodies have long since died.

I think religion was created to help try to connect people through the same beliefs and hopes to carry them through the darkness of our lives and the universe (even if it always comes as a cost).

I'm not really for it myself but I don't diss people who do. Whatever keeps them happy (though sucky ones I do dislike for its bad qualities).

It's still around for that reason, but on a much more personal level. When someone can't explain why something happens, they like to know that they can just say that their god it. It goes the same way for bad things too. They could just blame it on an evil spirit or something similar.

religion is really used as a way to try and understand why we are here. it is used to help people cope with the idea that as human beings we really have no purpose. it also gives false hope to people that there is a place to go when you die, that you dont cease to exist but instead exist in another place of sorts. the only reason(in my opinion)to why religion is still around is because people still cannot coupe with reality. im really sorry if this is offensive.
