Nerdfighters

This afternoon I got home from a long hard day at school. I went to the fridge and pulled out my all time favorite drink. Tropicana No Pulp Orange Juice. I took the carton to my room and began to drink. Being the nerdfighter I am and seeing as there wasn't anything remotely watchable on TV I began to read the juice carton...

Did you know that for every carton of Tropicana no pulp orange juice you buy you can save 100 square feet of the rain forest? Well you can! And the last time I checked the lively-hood of the rain forest is a pretty big deal. Its really easy to do your part. Pick up a carton of orange juice from the grocery store, make a free account, and type in the code found on the top of the carton next to the expiration date. Plus for every code you enter you could win a prize! and how doesn't like prizes???
My patch of rain forest is in Peru, where will yours be?

i don't trust those stunts. also where does the juice come from. how are the oranges grown, harvested, what kind of labour do they use, what kind of pollution do they create , incectisites, water runoff ?

so many questions. every company has a green gimmick going these days.

even if you can save some rainforrest, buying the juice may do more harm than good.

The way I see it is I like orange juice and the rain forest. I was reading the carton like I said and just wanted to share it with some cool people but thatnks for your negativity anyways...

this is not about being negative.

if we want to save the planet we have to give up something.

we can't just go on overusing and overconsuming the way we do and magically save something by buying a product that is most likely using this to sell more while most likele exploiting the environment and low paid labour.

ergo; by buying into this you are most likely kidding yourself, saving nothing, and even worsee, you'll not do something real to save anything as you lull yourself in the ilusion that you are doing something.

leaving aside low paid migrant workers and pollution, this is a live and death issue for all of humanity.

As far as I know Tropicana grows most of its fruit in Florida, it's not-from-concentrate, and they're generally considered to be a good example when it comes to transport etc. You could probably find something more eco in stores specialized on that kind of thing, but when it comes to the stuff you can buy in regular stores Tropicana is probably one of the better options :)

what about labour. from what i know of floridian agriculture the way the workers are treated is close to slavery.
and pestisides.

i also read about this crazy situation where people living in california down the road from orange groves buy floridian juice to drink, because that is what is in the shops.

there seem to be scemes though for picking your own ectr,

i wish i could remember where i read that .

i am nevertheless anoyed by these attemts to make people buy things with promises of saving the world.

it's bad on so many levels. even if they really do what they promise it makes people think that they are helping which might stop them from doing something real.

i found this

You know why? Most Californian oranges are grown for eating, and most Floridian oranges are grown for drinking. Californian oranges have very little juice compared to Florida oranges, and trying to juice them would be inefficient. Florida oranges have a larger juice to pulp ratio, so that not very much orange flesh is wasted in the juicing process.
