Comment by Searching Out on April 11, 2013 at 6:40am I recognise that religion has done quite a lot for humanity and that it has also been responsible for atrocities, wars and abuse of power. What interests me is the religious impulse and why it evolved, perhaps we were at a stage where it was necessary for power to be ceded to certain groups and that this stage is now passing due to the level of education and awareness. It is interesting to note that religion seems to flourish in impoverished countries (which is why christianity is still expanding in such countries.) From a strictly scientific view of course one should not be an atheist but an agnostic as this leaves room for the atheist and the religous viewpoint to be proven or not. So many atheists are like the Bear that left it Alone (see James Thurber) in that they have swapped the certainty that god exists for that of another certainty that god does not exist. Both methods of thinking are similar in that there is a need for certainty whereas a truly developed intellect will allow the uncomfortable feeling that things may not be as they seem.

I am in the same sort of situation. Knowing that you are not the only one to deal with it/that other people are dealing with it at the same time makes everything... not easier but less lonely. Its always good to have people.
Comment by Jules on March 15, 2013 at 4:38pm Hey guys! I'd like to say I'm atheist, but my parents are very Christian, so it's hard to break away.. I'd love to get to know some of you :)
Comment by El on December 29, 2012 at 7:08pm @Kristien I'ma n ex-Christian as well! After I gave up my religion, I wanted to focus more on developing more personal relationships with the people around me because I realized I had one life to live. I actually wrote a memoir about my atheism for my English class. I basically wrote about how I put human relationships before any imaginary ones, and how that gives my life meaning. I would love to make some internet friendships on here! :)

I really think that's the best Christmas quote.

I used to be a pretty serious catholic. The way I have adapted is to take sort of a buddist approach. Even when you used to call on god for strength all you were doing was calling a strength within you that you needed some help to get out. You have not lost anything, you have just gained the knowledge that you can handle anything you face because you have more power within you then you think. There is no god to ask help from, you are the only one who can help you, and you have everything you need to help you, all you have to do is trust yourself and think rationally.

Here's the way I see it: the relationship was never there, it was all one sided and invented. If you need a connection to a power (like having Jesus) then think of how you are the way that the cosmos can know of it's own existence.

Comment by Santiago Julian Sosa Fiscella on October 21, 2012 at 10:25am Great! I've just found this group. I'm so happy to find other fellow atheists who aren't afraid of openly criticizing the existence of a God!
