@Aravis:

Holly Short of the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer is truly a strong female character and remains so throughout the entire series. She's a female police officer for the Lower Elements Police. She's witty and smart, as well as determined to be herself. Also, she's an elf. :D

Astrid "the Genius" from the Gone series by Michael Grant is also extremely strong. The Gone series also contains several other great female characters, such as Dekka. Who I also think is awesome.

Lisbeth Salander from Stieg Larson's the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is pretty amazing, as well, though don't read that if you're opposed to gore and do not want to read through a particularly gruesome rape scene (it's essential to character development as well as to the plot).

If you like manga, Rukia from Bleach by Tite Kubo is yet another extremely strong character with a deep backstory, as is

Deryn Sharp from Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan series (NOT manga).

Both Allie from the Skinjacker Trilogy and Risa from the Unwind Trilogy are examples of Neal Shusterman's exemplary ability to write great females.

And, of course, there's always Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, which contains a plethora of strong female characters. Hermione Granger, Ginny Weasley, Molly Weasley, Minerva McGonagall, and Nymphadora Tonks are just a few. :) I would highly recommend these books to anyone; they're all favorites of mine. Please give them a read. I hope you find a book you really love! DFTBA.

Anyone out there know of any books with strong female characters who are static throughout the book? It seems like whenever I read a book with a strong female character, she kind of gets weaker as the book goes on or otherwise just falls in love and forgets herself (Hello, Katniss Everdeen!). I am sort of getting tired of these books and I need some relief from this terrible epidemic of progressively weaker female characters! (BTW, before you tar and feather me, I am NOT dissing the Hunger Games. I loved those books, but it seemed to me like Katniss lost herself.)

Today one of my favourite authors is blogging at about how she came to write novels on the blog of Long and Short Reviews.

You can also participate in the blog’s weekly CONTEST, if you answer following question correctly and mail the answer to lasrcontests@gmail.com: What language is Julia Fellner’s mother tongue?

It’s totally awesome, so I can only advise you to check it out.
