I don't know much about the process of winemaking, but the point was that the ceremonial restrictions of the "Old Law" should no longer apply under the "New Law" of grace and mercy.

Its an interesting way of saying that the "Old Law" shouldn't apply anymore without necessarily calling it bad.

Question: Can anyone explain the new wine into old wineskins metaphor? I just never got it.

Yeah, if there was a discussion with a similair topic but a different basis for the discussion or something, that makes sense, but if it's basically the same discussion...

true, though if the intention is to start a discussion on a specific aspect or side conversation...i've actually done that too.

@E_Lewis - Sometimes, it is good to restart a discussion without the baggage of the previous discussion.  This also allows people to re-frame the opening post, so it is put in different / better words.  On the other hand, it can create a mess.

I think that it should be ok as long as they reference the older discussion and describe the differences as well as key points.

I think it'd be better to bump up old discussions than starting five discussions that are basically the same.
Comment by Danno on August 14, 2011 at 7:46pm
i've totally done that, so i hope it's ok.  as Bryan said though, a whole new thread on the same subject can confuse things or force a lot of repetition.

@Danno

I thought bumping up old discussions meant you go and comment on an older discussion. Going by your rules, that would be a good thing to bump up discussions, not a bad thing.

i think the thoughts are 1. it's easier to find a discussion when there aren't eight threads about it

2. it cuts down on repetition, which in turn means 3. more space on the servers and less work for the various ningmasters (not that i have room to talk about taking up memory)
