Any ideas on starting a 'Dead Poets Society'-esque group?

I'd love to start a weekly or biweekly poetry group, and I think that my local library would be interested. But I'd love to hear words from someone who has been involved in something similar. Any…Continue

@Maria and Amanda: Second I saw that I died laughing. Love that video, so very very much.

@Amanda I'm a Shakespeare nerd too. I know to be or not to be to the end and sonnets 17 and 18, those are my favorites

I came out here with a black page and a beer
to clear from my head the dead weight and the dead wood of last year
and the fear of fuckin up by not knowing enough or doing enough to make the tough and the rough smooth
With a choice voiced in plain diction that's easily understood
I plan to be the man who can stand when his place is in the face of what's harder than the grace of god
And tonight! I see a slight breeze teasing the leaves of the rose trees
and a light, which despite the dark I can mark from an impossible distance
and offered no resistance to something that can travel forever, like an idea
And I'm still here, I drank my beer, but the dead weight and the dead wood is elsewhere
It's stacked in a bonfire, and it'll stay there
until it's right to answer that light one night
With a spark lit from a blank page.

Our world is worth saving
But no one does care,
Tragedies are happening everyday everywhere.
The world needs changing, so, seeking this end,
Seeking a saviour,
This message I send:

Is there still a hero that can save our soul,
Or are we all lost cause, and we are all to fall?
Will X-Men save the day again
With their laser beams?
Is all that mere fiction stories,
Is that all dreams?

Look up is that a bird or a plane
look up is everyone insane
look up is that the superhero we need
nope its another ordinary man indeed

no superpower's necessary to save planet earth,
No need for Superman that would be overkill.
All you would need is bravery, passion and will,
To spare us other miseries, to sweep all the dirt.

I've memorized Shakespeare's 130th Sonnet and can do a bunch of other Shakespeare stuff almost by heart... I can get pretty close to the end of To Be or Not to Be...

Though the 130th Sonnet memorization was because I watched THIS too many times.

Is that the sports related movie with Matt Damon? I had seen ads for it, but I didn't know that it was related to the poem at all. I just thought they had chosen a cool sounding title to go with a random movie. That's pretty cool, though.

Out of curiosity, has anyone here memorized poems for fun? I memorized a few poems in middle school/high school for speech competitions (which I have forgotten by now), but I'm hoping to get the Raven memorized (I've got a while to go). It'd be awesome to hear your experiences and tips.

Invictus is one of my favorites, too! I learned about it from my dad when I was in either high school or junior high. I'd have to say that to me it's quite inspiring.

I've just found out about poet that I think is pretty awesome: Francis Ledwidge. So now I'm going off to find poems by him. Here's one:

A burst of sudden wings at dawn,
Faint voices in a dreamy noon,
Evenings of mist and murmurings,
And nights with rainbows of the moon.

And through these things a wood-way dim,
And waters dim, and slow sheep seen
On uphill paths that wind away
Through summer sounds and harvest green.

This is a song a robin sang
This morning on a broken tree,
It was about the little fields
That call across the world to me.
Home, by Francis Ledwidge
