Chloe: Hola changes the address for you. Once you activate it, BBC iPlayer will read your IP address as being in the UK.

MoAde: I've seen mostly cases about sexism towards female characters, but some male cases also. I believe they cancel out too :D Some people just want to find a scandal in anything really.

How do you change the address?

Comment by Linorien on August 24, 2014 at 2:31pm

For those outside the UK, there's a chrome add-on called Hola (maybe on firefox too) and when you go to the BBC iPlayer website you can then change your IP address and watch straight from there.

Is the popular thing about decided whether it's sexist against males or females? Because I have valid arguments for both, which I think means that both are cancelled out by each other. :P

That's one of the most popular things right now, deciding if Doctor Who is sexist or not. I don't think it is.

But, I love everything about Doctor Who, so I'm pretty biased :D

Ahh, I see your point. Yes, I suppose I was jumping on the 'everyone's sexist' train a little early. :P

I think male companions do get a harder time, but their character development is some of the best in the show. Rory FREAKING Williams blowing up Cyberman fleets and punching Hitler. Mickey Smith living in a parallel world and blowing up Daleks, AND becoming awesome alien fighter with Martha. So even though they do have a hard time in the beginning, I think the end result is well worth it! To say it's sexism is a bit to far in my opinion, it is just a show.

I hate it when female>male sexism is used. It's just as bad as male>female sexism, but people pretend it's not. And every if Rory is a wimpy guy (which is something that I like about him) that doesn't mean that they should just insult him and put him down like that. I don't think it strengthens Amy at all, rather makes her less, in my eyes, for not sticking up for Rory.

i could wax philosophical about this trend in writing for quite some time... and it really is a trend, because i couldn't tell you the name of Britomart's intended, and the Faerie Queen is a contemporary of Shakespeare's plays.

so yes, unfortunately, a lot of writers have and do diminish male leads/romantic interests in order to (try to) strengthen female characters... then again the reverse has a much longer history.
