Who is the preacher?

on the episode where the bounty hunter comes onto the ship, he mentions that the preacher is more than that, and when he gets sick, his card is shown to the alliance and they give him priority medical treatment. so who exactly is he, that he is travelling with and helping these outlaws, and yet he is somehow extremely important person, so what gives?

I know I could read his backstory, like Joss' official one but I don't feel like spoiling the mystery. All I know is that he definitely is NOT going to the Special Hell and that's all that matters.

They made a comic about it now. It's called The Shepherd's Tale and reminds me of Memento. Well worth the read if not the purchase.
