Chell/Gordon: Mute?

I was  creeping around some forums and Valve stuff on wikipedia, when I came across that some argue that Chell isn't a mute. I would like to have one clarification though: I hear a feminine grunt when I take fall damage or turret damage. Does that qulify her as mute, or does she refuse to talk about the situation, like some suggest? Though no one ever doubted Freeman's muteness, I noticed in Half Life 1 and 2, he grunts, in a male voice, when he falls. Does this qualify?

Or am I being over-analytical?

I always assumed that silent protagonist syndrome was different from muteness.  Now they might be both, but I don't know how you could tell.

Yeah I am not sure that they actually mute. I think it is just the same as Link and Samus.
