'sup all, I'm new here, but I'm pretty experienced when it comes down to video-game mapping.
If you're looking to map for something based on the Quake or Valve (GoldSrc, Source, Source '07) engines and you want something easy to get into and pretty-much fully customizable, I recommend trying out Quake Army Knife. Supports pretty much every map format under the sun, as well as model imports, custom event scripts, triggers, lightning -- the lot. Basically, anything you can find in Hammer you can find here, but more friendly to use.
Hope it helps.

it takes alot of sittng and understanding, and unfortunately there is no one "guide." It helps to upload other maps, see how they are put together, and try to make you own versions.

It was a combination of that, youtube videos, and this:

yeah, some are really great but it takes forever to learn it, and get up to par with the big ones. suposedly the L4D SDK release will come with an instruction manual, an easier interface, and less code. -thats why its taking so long.

They want to make it easy for everyone to use, i just hope that they dont remove all the cool stuff...

SDK= source developers kit.
Its a little thing that lets you customize levles and maps and gametypes and all kinds of good stuff like that.

Usually steam makes an SDK compatable with thier recent games a few months after their release, and the L4D one is a bit overdue.

i had a D&D starting kit awile back, but too much setting up and it usually falls apart. Tried to find a nice online D&D with no mess, and ended up playing WoW.

oh yeah, and i have steam: Aliendoor
i have all the new stuff, and have been self-taught in SDK :D

used to be a hardcore 360 gamer, but dont have the console anymore :(
