Comment by Ashley Mullinax on April 22, 2011 at 11:27pm I participated this year, just as I did last year. Unfortunately, barely any people participated because it wasn't advertised very well. Last year it was supported by our school's GSA, but that club no longer exists because the school cut its funding and barely anyone in the club participated in any events.
Also, I found myself frustrated with a lot of people this year that DID participate. My friends Dana, Cassie, and I were mature and refined with our silence, writing things on our boards only when asked direct questions. There was a certain girl, who really annoys me, who was constantly writing stupid things on her board and would carry around a sign saying something along the lines of "Don't make me talk, respect my opinion." and would shove it in people's faces. Not that I don't agree with that, but I was like, "no one is making you talk..." and she actually made it possible to be obnoxious while being silent. She'd flail around and get in people's faces to get their attention.
What I'm trying to get at here, is that Day of Silence is not just about not talking. It's about keeping yourself quiet, refined, and withdrawn; just like those who are too scared of being bullied have had to do.

I did end up finish the rest of the day silent. It was easier for me this year, I think, because last year I was still living at home, and my family isn't exactly all that open-minded, and I didn't want them to think...well, we're all Christian, and it would have been difficult to explain to them, so I broke my vow after school. But this year, it was much better. :)

Comment by Becca on April 15, 2011 at 7:28pm My day worked out great!...until I got home. I couldn't tell my parents what I was doing so I talked very little. @Ashley, how did yours go?

It's a little lame, but at least it helps spread the word about it.
