And if you think about it, he wasn't doing any of it for Harry.  Sure, what he did was incredibly brave and selfless, but it was his love for Lily that caused him to do it.  He still hated Harry, and yes, acted like a bastard consistently throughout the series.

Thanks Katherine, you just said everything I meant when I said Snape acted like a bastard. he's one of my favorite characters as well.

He is rude, snappy and generally a bastard. True his intentions were good but he had the personality of a bastard. He constantly picks on people and enjoys winding them up. However, he doesn't lie and has boundaries through all the books he never mentioned Nevielles parents. He,s my favourite character. xD
