I once tried to read all three books cosecutively, but became too overwhelmed with intergalactic musings and infinite improbability to manage. I had to space them out with a few other good books in between...

Yaaaay, a Hitchhiker's group! Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was pretty much the first thing I was ever a proper fan of, and I absolutely adore it. (and @Isabel -- I also love the radio show! So good)
