First John Green?

just wondering, which of John's books did everyone start with?  why?  and if you like, did you find Nerdfighteria through the books or the books through Nerdfighteria?

 

i'd actually subscribed to the Vlogbrothers and signed up on here before i finally decided to go ahead and read the books.  while i'd heard about Paper Towns and even, of course, caught Johns video in which he reads an early version of the first chapter, i actually started on an Abundance of Katherines.  before i had any idea what any of the books were about, the title just interested me.

I read Looking for Alaska long before I discovered Nerdfighteria. I was discussing the book with a friend one day about 2 years after I read it and I said how I liked the book itself but I really didn't like Alaska too much because I thought she was a manic pixie dream girl and that annoyed me. My friend kept defending the book and in doing so she went on about John Green's personality and all that so I asked her how she knew so much about the author and the next day I was a certified nerdfighter. I read Paper Towns because of the videos, and then my sister gave me An Abundance of Katherines without even knowing who the author was.

one thing to keep in mind, at least in the Alaska case... death & memory have a way of exagerating things about people.  so it's possible it's our narrator's memory of her, as much as his (active) misunderstanding or her misrepresentation of her that causes her pixie status.  also, even though the title is Looking for Alaska there is a lot more to this story than Miles being infatuated with her.

I found the books through the vlogs. I decided to check out Looking For Alaska from my school library. It was my first John  Green book and honestly, I didn't like. Over my three years as a nerdfighter I've only read two of his books, the other being The Fault in Our Stars. I love that book. I finished it last night and yes, I did cry my eyes.

while there are certainly thematic echoes from one book to the next, each is unique, so you might want to check out the others.  up to you though

I subscribed to Vlogbrothers and, of course, heard about John's books. I've already knew Will Grayson, Will Grayson from some quotes on Tumblr. So I decided to read it. I fell in love so much. It was awesome. Then I decided to read all the others. I'm still in the process but yeah kk

we try to avoid spoilers, but there are a lot of references many of us make that would probably make more sense once you get through them.  still, no need to rush.

I found the books before the vlog. I picked up Paper Town first and only decided to check out vlogbrothers after I read An Abundance of Katherines (which would be my third John)

I read Abundance of Katherines first, mostly because I told my friend I wanted a John Green book for my birthday. She sent a description of all of them without titles, and I found that most interesting. I then went on to read Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns, and just recently Looking for Alaska and Will Grayson, Will Grayson. Abundance of Katherines remains my favourite simply because it was first (and also, you know, because I liked it the most)

I wrote a list of all the books I wanted to read and I bought Paper Towns but read An Abundance of Katherines first (beacuse I loved its name and it was a little smaller then Paper Towns) which I loved and I found it funny. I then found the Vlog and Nerdfighteria through Katherines, but I still haven't gotten around to reading Paper Towns.
