Language Nerds

Language Nerd of the Week- J.R.R. Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkein is well known for his career in writing, especially for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which were made into Acadamy award winning films by director Peter Jackson. But did you know Tolkien was also a linguist?

Tolkien learned Latin, French, and German from his mother, and studied Middle English, Old English (the language of Beowulf, an epic poem that would help inspire his later works), Finnish, Gothic, Greek, Italian, Old Norse, Spanish, Welsh, and Medieval Welsh. He was also familar with many others, including Swedish, Russian, and Norwegian. His knowledge of language would help him create the Elvish language, which would be used throught his works.

Howdy fellow language enthusiasts! I like languages and study linguistics bluh bluh, somehow though, I've ended up with Korean, Japanese and Cantonese as my main pursuits! I'm a huge fan of making grammar reports of random languages and not doing anything with them as well. ;w;

This seems like my kind of place. (:

Currently I am learning Quenya on my own. I know a bit of French, and just a tad bit of Spanish.. Later in life I hope to teach myself some Latin.

Oh! I'm so happy to find this group! I'm a language enthusiast, and study mostly Middle Eastern Linguistics. I know Standard Arabic, Egyptian Arabic, a bit of Farsi, and hope to start studying Hebrew soon. I have studied Japanese, Italian, Chinese, and Russian. (Though in my opinion Japanese is the hardest language I have EVER attempted, props to those who know it fluently!)

Buongiorno tutti!

I really love learning languages, though due to the way my university schedules languages courses, I haven't had a lot of opportunities to do so. As far as languages I know, I know a tiny bit of Spanish (but it's so rusty) I'm pretty proficient in Italian. I can read Middle English well but I'm pretty bad at Old English. XD

I really want to learn Latin and Russian... and possibly German?

Hi ! I'm so glad to see your group !

I love a lot  languages (even if I am not really good to learn them...silly me ^^). In bulk, I'm learning English ( I'm French), Spanish, I am not really good at it,  and Ancient Greek in High School. But in my free time (which is not often) I am learning Russian, Japanese and Latin. I know a few words in Italian and Sweedish too, thanks to my sister . If you want help in French, contact me I will be really glad to help you :D

Anyone got any tips for learning Sindarin? It's tricky when you don't know anyone who speaks it :/

Rosetta stone isnt too bad.  There's also Living languages, and all manner of decent programs.  you can find some at Barnes & Noble.

I've always wanted to get really good at Middle English.  I spent hours listening to readings of proper pronunciation.  I also really want to learn Arabic, but I have no idea where to start.

Kathryn, what language?

     I wish my high school had a linguistics class! It would give me a good idea of what that would be like studying in college. If anyone knows any good resources for online that are well... helpful... please message me!
