Language Nerds
Tolkien learned Latin, French, and German from his mother, and studied Middle English, Old English (the language of Beowulf, an epic poem that would help inspire his later works), Finnish, Gothic, Greek, Italian, Old Norse, Spanish, Welsh, and Medieval Welsh. He was also familar with many others, including Swedish, Russian, and Norwegian. His knowledge of language would help him create the Elvish language, which would be used throught his works.

Well hello, everyone. I'm Francis's boyfriend, and yes, it's true that I'm working on my own language. I might use it in writings, but I still think it'd be fun to make one either way. Right now, it's mostly Germanic-sounding, but I plan to touch it up, mix it up a bit, you know. Anyway, it's good to be here ^_^

This year in university, I took two semesters of linguistics for fun, inspired by some heroes of mine. I would love to pursue it further, but I have to balance it with my other love, history. Don't know how many careers for etymologists exist, but more knowledge of obscure things never hurts a nerdfighter.
My favourite language is probably slang. Second is German, followed by English (my mother tongue), and Hindi. The last is beautiful, but I don't know a word of it.

That's not a waste of time at all! As a kid and younger teen I tried multiple times to create a language, but like you did, had little understanding on how language worked and based it on English.

It's always a challenge to start. I started when I was 7 or 8 and it was very much based on English. I had no real understanding of how language worked. Now it's almost a completely different language. Pronunciation is predictable based on spelling, verbs are actually conjugated, and I have unique idioms. Any language you learn will help you even if it's only in the grammar department. I'm told it's a waste of time but I have fun and I hope someday someone will put the time in to learn it as so far one of my friends can only understand about 5 phrases.

I suppose it would, Rachel! I've never myself perfected the speak of ubbi dubbi...but I can speak igpa atinla. =D
